UCC and Udarás na Gaeltachta agree training and education partnership

30 Sep 2026
Prof Pádraig Ó Macháin (Barr na gCnoc), and Tomás Ó Síocháin (CEO Údarás an Gaeltachta) with students from Coláiste Daibhéid, Gaelcholáiste Mhic Shuibhne, Bishopstown Community School and Gaelscoil Mhachan.

University College Cork (UCC) and Udarás na Gaeltachta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will form the basis for a partnership in various activities connected to education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students, with emphasis on business and enterprise.

For many years, UCC has been running courses for Irish and international students in the Gaeltachtaí of Corca Dhuibhne in Kerry and An Rinn in Co. Waterford. Using this MOU, the intention now is to expand activities into other Gaeltacht areas, particularly Baile Bhuirne where the current development of Coláiste Íosagáin is a flagship Údarás na Gaeltachta project.

This MOU will facilitate the development of supports that can offer significant computing facilities to start up or existing companies in an increasingly dynamic and competitive digital space in Baile Bhuirne, as well as supporting students participating in the restructured BA degree at UCC.

The MOU will be signed by the UCC President, Prof. John O'Halloran, and by Údarás CEO, Tomás Ó Síocháin, at a ceremony in UCC.

President of UCC, John O’Halloran stated:

“This MOU seeks to help support and grow enterprise in Baile Bhuirne. We are delighted to deepen our relationship with Údarás which has extended over many years.”

CEO, Tomás Ó Síocháin  stated:

“The recent opening and development of Campus Íosagáin has also created a platform for remote research and innovation - with secure and resilient network connectivity the Baile Bhúirne location has direct access to UCC research facilities. This is an example of the emerging opportunity to build on the long co-operation with UCC and Gaeltacht based activities to meet the growing demand for Irish language education, training and services.

To celebrate this event, Údarás will announce a Gaeltacht scholarship scheme for pupils participating in Barr na gCnoc, UCC's second-level Irish-Language project based in Knocknaheeney.
