Presidential Visit
27 May 2026
We were honoured to have the President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly, visit our partner school Gaelcholáiste Mhic Shuibhne. The President visited the school to observe the work being done by tutors and local primary schools with Gaeilge Stretch, as well as meeting students from the Aonad lán-Ghaeilge.
The President observed and participated in a demonstration of Gaeilge Stretch in the school library. The President met students and teachers from our partner schools as well as our Gaeilge Stretch tutors. The students thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and they represented themselves and their schools incredibly well and with great integrity.
The President continued her visit to the Aonad lán-Ghaeilge. Here she met with students and discussed their education with them. The President then met with the Student Council, a group who give the students of the Gaelcholáiste a means to voice their opinions and ideas about the events in school.
The President then met with the Young Scientists who won the “Ombudsman for Children” award and placed first in their category. The President showed a great interest in their project and highly praised the students and their work.
The President continued to a display of woodwork projects that have been completed in the school since its inception. The President, accompanied by her husband, Brian McEnry, showed a keen interest in the projects, being that Mr. McEnry is a retired Woodwork teacher.
The President finished her visit to Gaelcholáiste Mhic Shuibhne with a musical performance from staff and students. Students sang a Gael-rap piece that they had written at the Barr na gCnoc run summer camp.
It was a great honour to welcome the President to our partner school. The President praised the students and motivated them through her speech. The President described the school as a “becaon of light” in the community.
