Role of a Peer Support Leader
Peer Support Leaders are trained student volunteers who help create a welcoming, supportive and connected university community. Their role is grounded in empathy, respect and genuine student‑to‑student understanding. They’re here to listen, guide and support you as you settle into university life and navigate the challenges that come with it.
What Peer Support Leaders Do
✔ Offer a listening ear
Peer Support Leaders are available if you need someone to talk to about university life, challenges, worries or simply how you’re feeling. They listen without judgement and aim to help you feel heard and supported.
✔ Provide guidance and information
Whether you have questions about campus services, academic supports, student life, or where to go for help, Peer Support Leaders can point you in the right direction and help you understand your options.
✔ Help you settle into university life
Transitioning into college can be exciting but also overwhelming. Peer Support Leaders help new students find their footing, build confidence and feel part of the community.
✔ Create safe, confidential spaces
Your privacy matters. Peer Support Leaders treat conversations with respect and confidentiality, only passing on information if there is a risk of harm or a legal requirement to do so.
✔ Build community and connection
By organising activities, engaging in conversations and being present throughout the year, Peer Support Leaders help foster a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong.
What Peer Support Leaders Don't Do
❌ They don’t act as counsellors or provide professional mental‑health care.
❌ They don’t tell you what to do. They support you in making your own choices.
❌ They don’t judge, push advice or make assumptions about your experiences.
How Peer Support Leaders Are Trained
All Peer Support Leaders complete structured training that covers active listening, boundaries, communication, inclusivity, wellbeing awareness and referral pathways. This prepares them to support students with care, confidence and professionalism.
Why Peer Support Matters
University can be exciting, challenging, confusing or all of the above. Having someone who understands what you’re going through makes a real difference. Peer Support Leaders bring lived student experience, empathy and a friendly face; helping you feel connected, confident and supported throughout your time at university.
