GenAI Declarations

Welcome to our webpage about GenAI Declarations. Here, we explain what a GenAI Declaration is and why it is important to include one as part the assessment submission process, provide template wording to include in such a declaration and provide samples of what a completed GenAI Declaration might look like.  You may wish to share these samples with your students to guide them in the completion of their declaration.

Please explore the links below to find specific information you are looking for on this page.

What is a GenAI Declaration?

A GenAI Declaration is where students attest that they have or have not used GenAI in accordance with the expectations that you have set out in your GenAI Statement.  Where you have stated that no use of GenAI is authorised in your module, letting students know that they will have to meet this expectation places academic integrity to the forefront of their minds as they complete their assessment.  Where you permit the use of GenAI, a GenAI Declaration allows the student to practice academic integrity by setting out how they have used it.

Wording for a GenAI Declaration

Where you do not permit the use of GenAI in your module, you may wish to include wording such as the following in your existing assessment submission sheet (if you have one):

By submitting this assignment online, I understand that I am asserting that:

  1. In accordance with the instructions provided by the module co-ordinator, I have not used any GenAI tools or technologies to prepare this assessment.

  2. I have read and understood the regulations of University College Cork concerning academic integrity.  I understand that breaches of academic integrity can incur penalties.

Where you do permit the use of GenAI in your module, you may wish to include wording such as the following in your existing assessment submission sheet (if you have one):

  1. I used the following AI tool(s) in the preparation of this assessment:

  2. I used this tool (or these tools) to:

  • In filling out your response above, please describe how you engaged with the tool(s) you used and the impact this had on the assessment you submitted.

By submitting this assignment online, I understand that I am asserting that:

  1. I have reviewed and evaluated all AI-generated content and confirm that it accurately reflects my understanding and intended meaning. I maintain full responsibility for the content and its accuracy.

  2. I followed the module co-ordinator’s instructions on the permitted use of AI for this assessment.

  3. I have read and understood the regulations of University College Cork concerning academic integrity.  I understand that breaches of academic integrity can incur penalties.

The above wording is provided as a template and you can adapt as necessary to meet the requirements of your module so that it sits alongside other requirements students may need to attest to such as word count limits or completion of the Academic Integrity Fundamentals course (as provided for in the Assessment Policy).

If you do not already use assessment submission sheets, the above wording has been incorporated into the following template documents that you can download and adapt as required: GenAI Declaration Template (GenAI not permitted) and GenAI Declaration (GenAI use permitted).

Sample of a Completed GenAI Declaration

For an example of what a completed GenAI Declaration looks like where GenAI use is permitted, please see: GenAI Declaration (Completed Sample)

You may wish to share this sample or a variation of it with your students to assist them in filling out the GenAI Declaration you design.
