Student Mobility
Exploring Europe Through UNIC
One of the key benefits of being a student at University College Cork and part of the UNIC alliance is access to a wide range of international mobility opportunities.
Mobility is about learning, collaborating, and gaining international experience with students and staff from other European universities. While studying abroad for a semester remains a popular option, mobility today takes many different forms. Mobility opportunities allow students to develop intercultural skills, build international networks, enhance their CVs, and gain valuable academic and professional experience. Through UNIC, students can participate in:
- Virtual Mobility: international learning experiences that take place entirely online.
- Physical Mobility: activities that involve travelling to another UNIC university or city.
- Blended Mobility: a combination of online collaboration and a short period of physical mobility.
Virtual Mobility
Virtual mobility allows students to engage internationally without travelling abroad. These opportunities are often more accessible and flexible while still providing meaningful intercultural and collaborative learning experiences.
UNIC Open Online Courses give students the opportunity to take free online courses offered by partner universities across the alliance. These courses, or what we in UCC call 'modules', cover a wide range of subjects and are delivered entirely online, allowing students to learn from lecturers and collaborate with students from other European universities.
Where can I find Open Online Courses?
Most Open Online Courses are advertised through the UNIC Virtual Campus. Students can browse available courses, view start dates and registration deadlines, and enrol directly through the platform. Occasionally, some courses may be advertised and registered outside the Virtual Campus. Students are therefore encouraged to check both the UNIC Virtual Campus and UNIC UCC's Instagram page for information on upcoming opportunities.
Students are encouraged to discuss participation with their UCC School or department, and to consult with UCC’s Concurrent Registration Policy.
Recognition
Open Online Courses are not currently recognised for academic credit at UCC. Students who successfully complete a course receive a UNIC certificate of completion from the host institution, which can be included on a CV, LinkedIn profile, or personal portfolio. For research students in UCC, it may be possible to have credits recognised for Open Online Courses, through the UCC Policy on recognition of courses / modules taken externally by research students.
Virtual Exchange enables students from different countries and cultures to work together online as part of their regular academic studies. Rather than taking place outside your degree programme, Virtual Exchange activities are usually integrated directly into existing UCC modules. Students collaborate with peers from other UNIC universities through online discussions, collaborative projects, presentations, and challenge-based learning activities. Virtual Exchange helps students to
- develop intercultural communication skills.
- work in international teams.
- gain global perspectives on their subject area.
- build confidence collaborating across cultures and disciplines.
How can I take part in a Virtual Exchange?
Virtual Exchanges are coordinated by module coordinators and academic departments. If you are interested in participating in a Virtual Exchange, consider speaking with your lecturer, programme director, or department to express your interest in this type of international learning activity.
Recognition
Because Virtual Exchange activities are embedded within your regular UCC modules, any credits earned form part of your normal programme of study and assessment.
Lightning Bites are free short online learning sessions delivered by universities across the UNIC alliance. Each session focuses on a specific theme and provides students with an opportunity to engage with academics, professionals, and fellow students from across Europe. These sessions are:
- Online and free to attend.
- Typically short and accessible.
- Open to students from across the UNIC alliance.
- An excellent way to gain an international perspective with a minimal time commitment.
Where can I find Lightning Bites?
Current and upcoming Lightning Bites are advertised on the UNIC website. Students are encouraged to check regularly for new sessions throughout the academic year.
Recognition
Lightning Bites are extracurricular learning opportunities and do not carry academic credit. However, participation can demonstrate international engagement and continuous learning.
Physical Mobility
Physical mobility involves travelling to another UNIC university, city, or organisation to study, work, or participate in international learning activities. Below you will find more information on Erasmus Exchanges at a UNIC University, Summer Schools, Internships and UNIC Joint Masters Programmes.
Students can undertake an Erasmus exchange at one of the ten UNIC partner universities. An Erasmus exchange allows you to:
- Study abroad for a semester or full academic year.
- Experience a different culture and education system.
- Develop intercultural and language skills.
- Build an international network of friends and professional contacts.
How can I apply?
Students interested in studying at a UNIC partner university should contact the UCC International Office and explore available Erasmus opportunities through the UCC Go Abroad website. The UCC International Office can advise on eligibility, applications, funding, and destination choices, while the UNIC team can provide information on opportunities available specifically within the alliance.
Useful contacts and links:
UNIC universities regularly organise short-term international programmes, most commonly during the summer, although opportunities may also be available at other times of the year, including spring, autumn and winter.
These programmes often combine:
- Academic workshops
- Lectures and seminars
- International group work
- Cultural and social activities
They provide an excellent opportunity to gain international experience without committing to a full semester abroad.
How can I find Summer School opportunities?
Summer School opportunities are advertised throughout the year by the UCC UNIC team. To stay informed:
- Follow the UNIC UCC Instagram account.
- Check the UCC UNIC website regularly for announcements.
- Contact unic@ucc.ie for information about upcoming opportunities.
Recognition
Summer Schools are generally non-credit-bearing activities and do not usually count towards a UCC qualification. However, participants may receive a UNIC or host institution certificate of completion, depending on the programme, which can be used to demonstrate international and intercultural learning experience.
Students interested in pursuing postgraduate study can apply for one of UNIC's joint degree programmes. These programmes provide students with a truly international learning experience across multiple universities within the alliance.
Superdiversity in Education, Organisations and Society (SEOS) is a joint Master's programme examining diversity, inclusion, migration, and social change in contemporary societies.
Redesigning the Post-Industrial City (RePIC) is a joint Master's programme focused on urban transformation, sustainability, and the future development of post-industrial cities.
Blended Mobility
Blended mobility combines online and physical mobility, offering students the best of both approaches. Students collaborate online before, during, and after a mobility experience, while also participating in a short period of travel to another partner university. This format makes international experiences more accessible and reduces the cost and duration of travel.
Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) combine online collaboration with a short period of physical mobility at a partner university abroad. Students work with peers from different countries through online activities before and/or after travelling for an intensive in-person component. BIPs offer an accessible way to gain international experience while requiring less time abroad than a traditional semester-long exchange. Through a BIP, students can:
- work in international teams.
- develop intercultural skills.
- gain experience of another European university.
- engage with real-world challenges and projects.
How can I take part in a BIP?
BIP opportunities are advertised throughout the year by the UCC UNIC team and academic departments. To stay informed:
- Follow the UNIC UCC Instagram account.
- Check the UCC UNIC website regularly for announcements.
- Contact unic@ucc.ie for information about current and upcoming opportunities.
Recognition
BIP credits are not currently recognised as part of UCC degree programmes. However, students can include the experience on their CV, LinkedIn profile, and future applications as evidence of international learning and engagement. For research students in UCC, it may be possible to have credits recognised for Blended Intensive Programmes through the UCC Policy on recognition of courses / modules taken externally by research students. Students participating in a BIP abroad should obtain:
- Certificate of Attendance
- Learning Agreement
- Transcript of Records

Here is what our students say about mobility through UNIC!
Kseniia Kosmynina, PhD Student at TNI:
"From the very beginning of my PhD, I felt my project has commercialization potential; however, it’s hard to dedicate time to stakeholder mapping and to clearly define potential customers. Through the exercises in the program, I was finally able to articulate a clear “mission” and identify the target costumer this project may have. I really enjoyed being part of such a diverse group. The level of organization was exceptionally high - from the city tour, the catering to the classes themselves. After visiting Erasmus University, I believe it would be incredibly beneficial to broaden our inter-university collaborations!"
Kseniia took part in the Academia to Entrepreneurial Impact (A2EI) Programme at the Erasmus Centre for Entrepreneurship in Rotterdam in 2025
