Gael Rap from the Northside of the City

We held an incredible event in UCC’s Aula Maxima on Thursday, 19th March, to bring our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations to a close.

We held an incredible event in UCC’s Aula Maxima on Thursday, 19th March, to bring our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations to a close. Barr na gCnoc and Kabin Studio came together once again to celebrate the Gael-Rap songs created in the Kabin Studio over the past two years.

The performance showcased the students’ newfound grá for Gaeilge, their enthusiasm for sharing the language with others, and the ways in which Irish can be used as a social tool that brings joy to everyday life. The students performed more than 20 songs, both in groups and as solo acts, with absolute passion and energy. With over 120 people in attendance, they succeeded in getting the entire audience on their feet for the final few songs of the night.

Performances of Is Linne Í, Fáilte go Knocka, and particularly the recently released Laochra were among the highlights of the evening.

Before the performance, there was also a special screening of Gealtra, a film by UCC Film Artist in Residence Brendan Canty. Brendan is a renowned and award-winning director, and this wonderful film explores the role of the Irish language within the Kabin Studio, as well as the impact both the Kabin and the language have had on the young people featured throughout the documentary. The film is a masterpiece and recently won Best New Irish Feature at the Cork International Film Festival.

Every Friday, an after-school collaboration between Barr na gCnoc and the Kabin Studio takes place in the Kabin, where students come together to collaborate and create Irish-language rap music as a means of self-expression. The songs explore themes ranging from their interest in Gaeilge and trips to the Gaeltacht, to the confidence they have gained through creating art through the medium of Irish. It was an absolute joy to see them perform these pieces on stage.

The showcase in the Aula was a truly special occasion, and we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to work alongside these young people over the past two years and to witness firsthand the impact that their Gaeilge and Gael-Rap have had on the Northside, across the country, and internationally.
