National Army Soldier James Kenrick or Kendrick Jr

National Army Soldier James Kenrick or Kendrick Jr (age 31) of Fleanmore, Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick (near Fermoy)

Date of incident: 30 July 1923

Sources: Death Certificate (Fermoy District, Union of Fermoy), 30 July 1923; MSPC/3D34 (Military Archives).

Note: Private James Kendrick fell off a military lorry and sustained fatal injuries to his head in an accident near Fermoy on 30 July 1923. He died of laceration of the brain two days later at Fermoy Union Hospital. See Death Certificate (Fermoy District, Union of Fermoy), 30 July 1923.

His pension file recorded his surname as Kenrick, with a residence at Fleanmore, Ballyhahill, Co. Limerick. His military unit was C Company of the 38th Infantry Battalion. His mother Mary Kenrick was initially awarded a gratuity of £60, but this sum was later increased to £100 on appeal. See MSPC/3D34 (Military Archives).

James Kenrick seems to have been one of the children of the agricultural labourer James Kenrick Sr and his wife Mary, who in 1901 resided with six of their children at house 6 in Flean More townland in Fleanmore parish near Ballyhahill. The father was then 37 years old; his wife was 40. In that year five sons and one daughter, ranging in age from 1 to 15, lived there with their parents. James Jr was not then residing at home. Two of his brothers in 1911 lived with neighbouring farmers as farm servants; it is likely that James Jr had been employed in this way in 1901.
