Note: This was one of the worst disasters to befall any unit of British troops during the whole of the Independence War. Born in 1902 and resident at 92 High Street in Alton (Hampshire) in 1911, Washington was one of seven soldiers killed or mortally wounded. He was buried in Alton Cemetery.
