RIC Constable Daniel Brien or O’Brien (aged 34) (between Watergrasshill and Riverstown)

Note: Attached to the Tuckey Street Barracks in Cork city, Brien was accidentally killed in a collision near Watergrasshill between a police lorry and a farmer’s carts. O’Brien was thrown from the vehicle and struck his head as he landed on the road. He had ‘a large lacerated wound above the left ear’ and suffered six broken ribs on the left side of his body. The driver of the police lorry had swerved to avoid a ‘dark object’ seen in the roadway; this turned out to be two carts joined together near the side of the road. The carts had no lights and the fatal accident occurred in darkness at about 5:45 p.m. on 12 November 1920. Constable Brien was dead on arrival at the Cork Military Hospital. See CE, 17 Nov. 1920.
