UCC has appointed Professor Gerard O’Keeffe as its new Vice Head for Research and Innovation at College of Medicine and Health.

Congratulations to all our students in the College of Medicine and Health who were conferred in UCC's historic Aula Maxima on Wednesday 29th March!

Dr. Aoife Fleming will promote the development of Interprofessional Learning (IPL) opportunities for students as well as supporting collaborative partnerships between College of Medicine and Health and the health services and promoting public and patient engagement in IPL education. She will lead an IPL action plan and work with a community of IPL advocates across Schools and Departments in CoMH to promote IPL education and research.

The College of Medicine and Health celebrated the achievements of 36 students who received a Quercus Undergraduate College Scholarship at a special event in the Dr Dora Allman Room on Thursday, 23 March. 

UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery has attained a top 50 place in the QS subject Rankings - a collective well done to the staff and students of the UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, clinical partners and national and international collaborators linked with the School. This is truly a collective effort.

This year Nursing attained the highest subject ranking across 54 specific subjects ranked by QS within UCC - a fact that the school is extremely proud of.

In addition a QS score of 33, places UCC’s School of Nursing and Midwifery as the top ranked School in Ireland. World university rankings show nursing is one of Ireland’s strongest subjects with four Universities making it to the top 100 in the QS rankings most years.

“I feel privileged to be able to share what I have experienced, found and felt so far in my journey with the team behind the trial in the hope of making life better for more patients in future.”  Mr Martin O’Sullivan from Cork who lives with prostrate cancer, was among the patients consulted in the trial’s design  

Clinical trials for a new €300,000 Irish Cancer Society research project based at Cork University Hospital and supported by the UCC Cancer Trial have been successful and this new project is expected to begin in April 2023 helping make crucial improvements to quality of life for men facing devastating cancer diagnoses.

Musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of disability worldwide, approximately 75 million people in Europe are affected by chronic pain; in Ireland alone an estimated 1.65 million people report chronic pain.

Despite the widespread prevalence of musculoskeletal pain conditions, management is often suboptimal with outcomes of treatment poor.

The 7th Interdisciplinary Cork Pain Symposium brings together international and local expertise in the field of pain science and management. The symposium aims to highlight current issues in pain management and present some of the current developments in musculoskeletal pain, its assessment and treatment.

The iEd Hub, through the School of Pharmacy and Cork University Business School, are delighted to announce the launch of a new 1-year postgraduate MSc programme in Industrial Pharmaceutical Sciences, Operations and Management.

This unique multi-disciplinary programme covers the technical, quality, regulatory skills required to work in the (bio)pharma industry, as well as the management, leadership and transversal skills required in the workplace. The programme was developed by the iEd Hub, a HCI Pillar three funded industry-academia consortium, with industry for industry, ensuring employability is at the core of the curriculum.

Dr. John Torres, NBC News Senior Medical Correspondent, was a guest speaker at School of Medicine grand rounds at Cork University Hospital recently.

A renowned emergency room physician, Dr. Torres is an adjunct clinical professor at University College Cork and contributes to the prehospital care special forces Medicine teaching programmes.

The topic of discussion was ‘Media and Medicine’. Dr. Torres spoke about the importance of medical messaging, how this was highlighted during the pandemic when many within the medical profession were called upon by the media to share their expertise. “We had to convert, explain science and medicine to the general public – not always an easy thing to do”.

More than 750 children and lots of sick and injured teddies attended UCC Med Soc’s hospital this week. The annual event aims to help children feel more at ease when visiting the doctor and other healthcare professionals.

The children aged between 4 – 6 brought their sick and injured teddies to be treated at the Teddy Bear Hospital hosted by medical students at University College Cork’s Medical Society.

Our CoMH Researcher Spotlight Series aims to showcase some of the diverse range of cutting edge research being undertaken by researchers at all career stages, providing an insight into the motivation behind their rewarding careers and highlighting opportunities for network building and further collaboration.

Our series begins with María Rodriguez Aburto, PhD, a Senior Lecturer, Group Leader and ERC-funded Investigator based in UCC's Dept. Anatomy & Neuroscience and APC Microbiome Ireland.

Students and colleagues at University College Cork’s (UCC) School of Medicine and Department of Surgery met with two of the world’s leading endocrine surgeons, Dr. Jim Norman and Professor Martin Walz at Cork University Hospital (CUH) recently as part of the RCSI Charter Day.  

Professor Walz and Dr. Norman participated in a number of surgeries in CUH whilst being watched by many of our surgical students and colleagues from UCC and CUH.  

Professor Paul Redmond, Head of the Department of Surgery at University College Cork and Cork University Hospital said: “this was a truly unique opportunity for UCC-CUH and Irish surgery to welcome and greatly benefit from the knowledge of these two revolutionary and renaissance surgeons of our time. Our students were immensely delighted that our guests were so forthcoming with help and advice and answered their questions”. 

Dr. Jim Norman is based in Florida, America. He is recognised as one of the world’s foremost experts on parathyroid disease and hyperparathyroidism. Professor Martin Walz is based in Essen, Germany. He has dedicated his surgical career to endocrine surgery, with a special interest in minimally invasive techniques in general surgery.

• Leading UCC academics elected as Presidents of European radiology societies. 
• Professor Adrian Brady has been appointed as President of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Congress of Radiology (ECR).
• Dr Andrew England has been elected President of the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS).

Two Irish radiology leaders have been appointed to presidential posts in Europe.  

Professor Adrian Brady, Clinical Professor of Radiology, UCC and Consultant Radiologist at Mercy University Hospital, Cork has been elected President of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Congress of Radiology (ECR). The ESR, with over 130,000 members from 186 countries worldwide, is the world’s largest radiology society. It is the first time a radiologist based in Ireland has held this leadership position. 

Dr Andrew England, Senior Lecturer in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy at School of Medicine, UCC was elected President of the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS). The Federation represents 35 countries and over 100,000 radiographers and radiation therapists at European level. It is the highest position a radiographer can serve in Europe.  

The School of Public Health at University College Cork has been awarded accreditation from the Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation (APHEA), becoming the eighth institute globally to receive the prestigious recognition.

The School of Public Health drives the delivery of superior quality in research and advocacy in population health, health services and health systems to address global health challenges.

Established by Professor Ivan Perry and his team in 1997, the School of Public Health is the largest and highest-ranking school of public health in Ireland with a high-quality teaching and education programme and a research programme led by world-leading researchers.

Two of the world’s leading endocrine surgeons will visit University College Cork and Cork University Hospital on Thursday, February 2^nd as part of Royal College of Surgeon’s in Ireland (RCSI) Charter Day. As part of their visit, they will participate in a number of surgeries at CUH offering surgical students from UCC and surgical staff, a magnificent opportunity to learn and engage. 

This innovative part-time, blended-learning programme (Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and MSc) has been designed to an international standard and is suitable for healthcare professionals from a wide range of professions. It is a collaboration between clinicians at the world class Marymount University Hospital & Hospice and academics in UCC.

In4Kids is the first clinical trial network in Ireland to focus on children's health.

A new network putting children at the centre of decision-making in healthcare was launched today at University College Cork.

Funded by the Health Research Board (HRB), In4Kids, the Irish Network for Children’s Clinical Trials, will support innovative clinical research and trial design for children in Ireland. It is the first clinical trials network in Ireland to focus on children’s health.

The inaugural CoMH Research Conference, "from Molecules to People", took take place on 22nd September 2022 in the Devere Hall, UCC.

This highly successful Conference showcased the diverse range of basic, translational and people centric research across the College of Medicine and Health.

COMET is an international and interdisciplinary conference on communication, medicine and ethics.

COMET aims to bring together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, involving various healthcare specialities and the human and social sciences. A special emphasis will be on the dissemination of ongoing research in language / discourse / communication studies in relation to healthcare education, patient participation and professional ethics.

Art4Knowledge is a free Art Therapy Workshop Series funded by the Health Research Board (HRB) and facilitated by the UCC Cancer Trials Group (UCCCTG) in collaboration with Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork.

It offers an Art Therapy intervention to patients with or beyond a cancer diagnosis, families or close friends of patients with/beyond cancer, and UCCCTG clinical trials teams.

Participants will be encouraged to reflect on and better understand their own experiences, perceptions, and feelings around receiving cancer care and participation in clinical trials (patients/families), and the provision of cancer care (clinical trials teams), which they will communicate to each other using creative media.

We had a great evening welcoming our new Clinical Professors to College of Medicine and Health, University College Cork last night. Great to see so many familiar faces, friends and colleagues come together to acknowledge and celebrate academic research and teaching excellence.

Congratulations to Jack Murray, a first year PhD student at School of Pharmacy UCC who was awarded the esteemed Jane Grimson Medal of Excellence at this year’s Irish Research Council Awards.

Jack is one of four top-ranked early-career postgraduate researchers selected by the Irish Research Council for ‘Medals of Excellence’. Jack was awarded his medal for his work in the STEM category where he was given high praise for his research which investigates ways of addressing challenges associated with formulating oral drugs, such as poor water solubility. His focus is on the creation of a ‘smart’ development pathway - using artificial intelligence to assist formulators in choosing the best ingredients for each poorly water-soluble drug.

Professor Helen Whelton, Head of the College of Medicine and Health UCC, said this was a great achievement and she congratulated Jack on his excellent work.

Twenty-three year old Jack said he is delighted to receive this prestigious award. “I am working in this area because of the potential of artificial intelligence to streamline the clinical translation of tomorrow’s medicines. It will improve the safety of therapies already on the market and reduce the need for expensive experiments”

Jack said he would like to thank Professor Brendan Griffin and Dr. Patrick O’Dwyer for their time and help with his project.

College of Medicine and Health, UCC received a Higher Distinction award for its outstanding workplace standards at this year’s National Irish Safety Organisation Awards (ROI and NI) and it could not come at a better time. The award is indeed a fitting tribute to the huge work put in over the years by University Safety Officer Mr. John Ring who retires this week after 30 years managing all things safety at UCC.

A former civil engineering student of UCC John has worked as University Safety Officer providing safety management and compliance advice and supports to all FA and Schools (management and staff) since 1992.

The first annual UCC Cancer Trials Group (UCC CTG) Retreat took place on 25th November. The HRB-supported UCC CTG was established in January 2022 to bring together oncology clinical trials units at Cork University Hospital, University Hospital Waterford and the Bon Secours Cork Cancer Centre, in partnership with the HRB Clinical Research Facility UCC and University College Cork, to provide equitable access to cutting-edge cancer care in the South/Southwest of Ireland, in parallel with innovative cancer research and training opportunities.

The Retreat enabled staff of Cancer Trials Cork and Cancer Trials Waterford to come together in person for brainstorming and discussion, with patients and public attending the afternoon session.

Research into miscarriage, cancer care and testicular awareness are among the UCC research projects awarded Health Research Board (HRB) Knowledge Translation Awards for Health as part of a €1.2 million investment to help solve health challenges. 

Six successful UCC projects have received additional funding from the HRB for communication and dissemination activities, bringing scientific discoveries closer to the public. The HRB KTA programme supports researchers to work together to shape and deliver knowledge translation activities that will improve the exchange of research findings and its translation into policy and practice.

The annual National Student Midwife Debate organised by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) was held on Friday, 4 November 2022 in University College Cork (UCC) with the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery.

The event saw six student midwives, from each of the six education bodies that offer midwifery, compete in two teams to debate for or against a motion. This year’s motion was: ‘This house believes that the diminishing ‘normal birth’ rate is a threat to the midwifery profession’.

It was a lively and engaging debate with Nadia Hutton representing Trinity College Dublin, Laura O’Sullivan representing University College Cork and Claudia Donnelly representing Dundalk Institute of Technology debating for the motion, and Khayla Timothy representing University of Limerick, Lia Kehoe representing University College Dublin and Hannah Flaherty representing University of Galway debating against the motion.

Khayla Timothy, from Co Galway, who is studying midwifery at University of Limerick won the prize for best speaker at the debate.

Equality Week is an important opportunity to celebrate and explore how we can build healthier, happier and safer spaces for everyone, to create environments in which everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.

Senior Lecturer at UCC and GP Dr. Tony Foley is guest speaker at today’s ‘Understanding Dementia Together’ new IPL workshops. The workshops are hosted by School of Clinical Therapies, Brookfield, UCC and involve students from 11 different disciplines from across the College of Medicine and Health.

Dementia is one of the greatest health and social care challenges of our time. Dr. Foley says we need a structured pro-active model of care rather than reactive care for the many people living with dementia in Ireland and he says dementia needs to be part of a National Structured Chronic Disease Management Programme.

There are 64,000 people living with dementia in Ireland, predicted to increase to 142,000 by 2050.  It is estimated that 25% of all over 65 year olds in hospital in Ireland have dementia or cognitive impairment yet there is no specific dementia training given in clinical practice.  

Thanks to all involved in the development of this video - a very innovative way of showing the world what UCC's College of Medicine and Health had to offer - our teaching and research facilities are world class!

Following two years of virtual open days due to Covid restrictions, it was wonderful to meet with students and parents to chat about the programmes our College has to offer and to let them see our beautiful campus.

Sincere thanks to all our six Schools – Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery, Clinical Therapies, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Public Health – all of whom provided staff and students to staff information stands and deliver talks to our Open Day visitors.

It was a very busy and worthwhile day so thanks to all our Schools for helping to make the Open Day so successful.

A bright mural will now welcome young patients, families, and staff at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex (BHSC) in University College Cork (UCC) as the University unveiled the large artwork today.

UCC commissioned artist Kevin O’Brien to create the mural inspired by ‘A Bee at UCC’, a book written by JP Quinn, Head of the UCC Visitors' Centre and illustrated by UCC graphic designer Charlie Ruxton.

Unveiling the mural ‘A Bee at Brookfield’, Professor Nicole Müller said: “Combinations of color, lighting, and texture are key to setting the tone for spaces such as patient waiting rooms. The mural has transformed our reception into a warm, bright and welcoming space for our paediatric clients from HSE and South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH)”.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, toys and children’s books had to be removed from the clinic reception which left the waiting rooms less welcoming.

We are looking forward to welcoming thousands of visitors to our campus for our first in-person Open Day since 2019.

Senior cycle students will join us on campus to find out more about studying in UCC, so an exciting and busy Saturday lies ahead!

1. Mike Ryan said: “We are seeing signs that things are improving but we know too there are gaps - many people around the world are not protected, there are many systems that are still very weak, we don’t know how this virus will continue to evolve.”
2. Ryan said he is concerned “we have lost capacity to detect that new variant quickly. At the peak of the pandemic while we might have been under huge pressure we were having lots of testing and sequencing. We were detecting new variants quite efficiently and characterising them very well”.

MEET the amazing Dr. Harriët Schellekens, Dr Frances Shiely, Prof. John Cryan, Dr Elizabeth Brint and Dr Linda O'Keeffe. Their projects are all newly funded by the Health Research Board (HRB) as part of its Investigator-Led Projects (ILP) 2022 scheme.

UCC final year medical student Paul O’Donovan took a break from rowing and was back in scrubs this week to attend lectures here at College of Medicine and Health.

It is a busy busy month for the Olympian gold medalist who said he is putting time aside for study whilst also training hard to compete at 2022 World Rowing Championships (September 18^th – 25^th) in Racice in the Czech Republic where he and fellow reigning champion Fintan McCarthy will defend their title.

Sincere congratulations to three UCC professors who were recently elected to the Royal Irish Academy - Professor Patricia Kearney, Professor Geraldine Boylan and Professor Mairead Kiely.

Patricia Kearney is professor of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health, University College Cork. She is an internationally recognised Epidemiologist and Clinical Trialist, with an outstanding record in Population Health and Health Services Research and its effective translation for improved health. Her Health Research Board Research Leader research includes an evaluation of the national clinical programme in diabetes and modelling of the population burden of diabetes. 

An inspirational leader in the field of medicine has been awarded an honorary doctorate by University College Cork (UCC), as close to 200 medical students graduated from the university today.

The UK-based Higher Education agency AdvanceHE announced the conferring of the awards on the School of Nursing & Midwifery and the Dental School & Hospital. The announcement follows news earlier this year of the conferring of an award on the School of Public Health, bringing to eight the number of School-level awards in UCC.

Boost for Cork’s pharma and health tech future as major educational funding announced. 

Observed on 10th September every year, World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) provides the opportunity for people, across the globe, to raise awareness of suicide and suicide prevention.

The WSPD theme, 'Working together to prevent suicide’ aims to highlight that preventing suicide requires the efforts of many. ‘Step Closer’ is a short film that builds on this with empathy and compassion around the physical metaphor that ‘every step closer can connect someone to life’.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery has welcomed the comprehensive nature of the Nursing Homes Expert Panel Report, issued on 19 August, and how it gives credit to frontline care home nurses, health care assistants, catering and cleaning staff and care home managers who demonstrated exceptional resilience and commitment to provide care to their residents and families.

The video, which coincides with International Friendship Day on Thursday 30th July, features the original song ‘Best Friend’ performed by singer songwriter Brian Kennedy and performances from children with Down Syndrome and their siblings.

Funding awarded to healthcare innovations from HSE staff

The 2020 winners of Health Innovation Hub Ireland’s call for innovative ideas from companies, start-ups and SMEs has been announced.

The largest initiative to improve hospital work environments to date has officially begun, with an award of €4 million from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme.

The Association of Departments of General Practice Irish College of General Practitioners Joint Scientific Meeting 2020 will be held in Western Gateway Building, University College Cork on the 5th and 6th of March 2020. 

The annual Quercus College Scholarship ceremony, held in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, College of Medicine and Health, University College Cork took place on Wednesday 4th December 2019.

Professor Chris Lynch of the Cork University Dental School & Hospital has been awarded the prestigious Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA).

On the 26th November, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD, announced an €11.9m research collaboration in the field of precision oncology, which is supported by the Science Foundation Ireland Strategic Partnership Programme.

The College of Medicine and Health has announced that the first award of the Diploma in Paramedical Science to newly qualified National Ambulance Service (NAS) Paramedics at UCC has taken place.

Two new HRB Applied Research Award projects will enhance care of older people in both hospital and home settings.

Children and adults requiring special care dentistry whose needs have not been met in the past will be among those to benefit when Cork University Dental School and Hospital opens its doors in 2023.

Seven interdisciplinary teams of researchers have been awarded funding through the CiSA programme, created through the generosity of the College's corporate partners, including Boston Scientific, Pfizer, Laya Healthcare, and GSK.

The fifth Irish Street Medicine Symposium took place on the 27th and 28th of September in the Metropole Hotel and Western Gateway Building in UCC.

New molecules, developed by researchers in UCC, have been shown to dramatically improve the effectiveness of existing antibiotics against several strains of infectious diseases and will help address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.

The ASSERT Centre (Application of the Science of Simulation to Education, Research and Medical Technology) at UCC has entered into a landmark partnership with Vodafone Ireland becoming the first 5G telemedicine and medical robotics training centre in the world. The announcement was made at ASSERT today, Tuesday 13 August 2019, at the launch of Vodafone's commercial 5G network.

The world’s largest peanut allergy treatment trial, involving more than 30 Irish children, has found that a new oral treatment can successfully reduce senstivity to peanuts, and offers a real lifeline to those affected by the most common food allergy and the single cause of most food allergy deaths. 

New report shows the College of Medicine and Health generated €28.5 million in research income in 2017 alone.

An Post has unveiled a series of four new stamps celebrating scientific discoveries in Ireland, two of which feature the UCC research centres APC Microbiome Ireland and the INFANT Centre.

INFANT Centre announces collaboration with the HRB Mother & Baby Network to investigate the benefits of an additional diagnostic blood test to improve the outcomes of pregnant women with suspected pre-eclampsia.

A study of 290 medical students from University College Cork (UCC) carried out by UCC researchers highlights the lack of connection between the students’ performance in the Health Professions Admissions Test (HPAT-Ireland) and their self-reported empathy levels.

A study of the soft drink consumption patterns of more than 1000 schoolchildren presented at this year’s European Congress on Obesity in Porto, Portugal (17-20 May) shows that overweight and obese children tend to drink more sugar sweetened soft drinks than normal weight children.

The British & Irish Lions announced on Wednesday, January 18, three major appointments for the 2017 tour to New Zealand, Head Analyst Rhodri Bown, Head of Medical Eanna Falvey and Head of Strength & Conditioning Paul Stridgeon will support head coach Warren Gatland and his coaching team on the 10-match tour. 

Prof Mary Horgan, Dean, School of Medicine and Mr Gearoid McCarthy, UCC ASEAN Development Manager, recently visited  Thailand to discuss collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, specifically discussing student elective exchanges.

The  introduction of Irelands Maternal & Newborn Clinical Management System( MN-CMS) will see the implementation of an electronic health record (EHR) for all women and babies in maternity services in Ireland.  

The newly established SIA Society held their very first Inaugural Induction Ceremony at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, University College Cork.

Caring for a relative with dementia comes with an underappreciated cost to the health of the caregiver. This important and unpaid work may contribute considerable stress to the caregiver.

The UCC Clinical Pharmacy Summer School has been organised in association with Future University in Egypt (FUE).  UCC and FUE have an existing cooperation agreement whereby UCC supports the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Industries, FUE in the delivery of an enhanced Pharmacy degree programme by FUE in Cairo.

The London Chapter of the UCC Alumni Association organised a special event hosted by the Embassy of Ireland in London in partnership with University College Cork on 29th November at 6.00pm.  The focus of the event was a celebration of the Irish contribution to healthcare in the UK.

PEARRL (Pharmaceutical Education And Research with Regulatory Links) is a European Training Network (ETN) for innovative drug formulation strategies and biopharmaceutics tools with regulatory application.

Research from University College Cork has shown that practicing employed and self-employed therapists in Ireland- including chartered physiotherapists, physical therapists and athletics therapists- are more likely to suffer from work-related upper limb disorders.

University College Cork (UCC) has become the third university in Ireland to receive the Bronze Athena SWAN award, recognising its efforts to promote gender equality in higher education.

In a study published by the Journal of Surgical Education, on the 100 most cited articles in the area of surgical education Dr Anthony Gallagher, Director of Research at the ASSERT Centre, UCC achieved the greatest number of first author publications in the top 100, authored two of the top ten ranked articles including the number one cited paper “Virtual Reality Training improves Operating Room Performance”.

University College Cork and Breakthrough Cancer Research have launched a cookbook for cancer patients experiencing chewing or swallowing difficulties. The book, entitled ‘Eating Well with swallowing difficulties in cancer,’ will be available free of charge to cancer patients throughout Ireland.

The National Cancer Registry Board is pleased to announce the appointment, in association with University College Cork, of Professor Kerri Clough Gorr as Director of the National Cancer Registry and University College Cork’s first Professor of Cancer Epidemiology.

The Satava award, one of the most prestigious awards in the area of advanced technologies in medicine, has been awarded to Dr. Anthony Gallagher-- Professor and Director of Research at the ASSERT Centre, College of Medicine and Health, University College Cork.

The School of Medicine, University College Cork (UCC), has launched a new module called ‘Business Skills in Medicine’ to their undergraduate medical curriculum. It is designed to expose medical students to the business skills required to develop cost-effective practices.

Research from paediatricians in University College Cork’s School of Medicine has revealed that a weakness of a newborn infant’s skin barrier can help predict which child will develop food allergies, and could in the future be used to intervene to prevent both food allergy and other allergic conditions such as asthma during the course of their childhood.

CORK, IRELAND – 28 September 2015: The INFANT Centre (Irish Centre for Foetal and Neonatal Translational Research) at University College Cork (UCC), Bioscreen Health, laya healthcare and IBM launched the ‘LEANBH’ project in the Cork University Maternity Hospital today, designed to make pregnancy safer.

In December 2014 the Irish Minister for Health, with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), launched the new 5 year Master of Pharmacy Programme (MPharm) with the goal of helping future pharmacists better meet the changing needs of the healthcare system.

Wednesday 16th September is National Mouth Cancer Awareness Day. Monday 2 March 2015: Minister of State Kathleen Lynch has today launched PREPARED, a new national Primary Care Dementia project which aims to upskill and support GPs and Primary Care Team Members in order for patients to receive optimal, evidence-based dementia care.

LONDON, 27th January 2015: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it is working with the Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research (INFANT) at University College Cork (UCC) to help improve long-term outcomes for babies in neonatal intensive care through early and accurate detection of neurological problems.

Data published today from BASELINE (Ireland’s first prospective birth cohort study) in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the world’s highest ranked allergy journal.

STOPP/START : these are acronyms for the Screening Tool of Older Persons Prescriptions (STOPP) and Screening Tool to Alert to the Right Treatment (START). The STOPP/START criteria were devised and validated in UCC for the purpose of detection of common instances of inappropriate prescribing in older people.

Thursday 15 January 2015: The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College Cork, reaches out to professionals and students throughout the world with a new online Masters in Occupational Health. The programme was officially launched today in the Jennings Gallery, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC.

Caesarean section is associated with a slightly increased rate of subsequent stillbirth and ectopic pregnancy, according to a large study of women living in Denmark, published in PLOS Medicine.

The first study investigating the quality of postgraduate medical training in Ireland, using a validated tool, has identified both strengths and weaknesses present systematically and has demonstrated that the measurement of learning environments at a national level provides useful information for quality assurance and improvement of training.

The College of Medicine and Health, in conjunction with the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, annual Research day was held on Wednesday 18th June 2014 at the Western Gateway Building. The theme of this year’s conference was – Food, Microbes and Molecular Medicine.

This very special exhibition opens in the Jennings Gallery, College of Medicine and Health, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC on Wednesday 18^th June and remains open until 8^th September. The exhibition features artworks loaned from a number of private collections and features what are considered the best Irish female artists of the 20^th century.

After recently being selected as a finalist at the national Social Media Awards, UCC has gone on to win outright for best social media engagement. The Social Media Awards, or ‘Sockies’ as they are more affectionately known, are an annual initiative that seeks to reward best social media practice.

Wednesday 28 May - Professor Daniel J. Penny - Chief of Paediatric Cardiology at the Texas Children’s’ Hospital, and Professor of Paediatrics – Cardiology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, receives the UCC Medical School Medal. Daniel entered UCC Medical School in 1979. In 1982 he was invited to read for an intercalated B.Sc. (Hons) in Physiology, graduating with 1st Class Honours in 1983.  He subsequently graduated M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O. in 1986, and interned in Medicine and Surgery at Cork University Hospital.

A recent study investigating the training paths and career plans of junior doctors training on programmes under the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, found that the ‘exodus’ of Irish postgraduate medical trainees, which has been at the forefront of national discussion, is more complex than that which has been originally portrayed.

A European consortium of clinicians and scientists has launched a major EU-funded collaboration project focused on the prevention of heart disease and stroke through food.  BACCHUS an acronym for ‘Beneficial effects of bioactive compounds in humans’ will receive €6 million in funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme.

Thursday 13 March 2014: Speaking in Washington at an event hosted by the Irish Science Foundation Ireland to celebrate links between Irish science and US industry as part of the St Patrick’s Day Festival, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, welcomed the announcement that the Cork-based Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research (INFANT) has signed a research partnership with Waters Corporation. 

The first research study into the impact of stillbirth on Consultant Obstetricians has just been published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

This study was carried out by Mr Daniel Nuzum & Dr Keelin O’Donoghue based in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, UCC at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

Association of University Departments of General Practice in Ireland (AUDGPI) Annual Scientific Meeting was held at the Western Gateway Building,UCC 6-7 March 2014

The 2014 meeting was be the Association’s 16^th scientific conference and saw close to 100 delegates attending.

Friday 28th February 2014; UCC Alumnus Dr. Éanna Falvey, Team Doctor to the Irish Senior Rugby Team and the Irish Amateur Boxing Association High Performance Unit receives his PhD.

Dr Falvey, MB BCh, PhD, MRCPI, MMedSci (SEM), FFSEM, has been involved in team coverage for Hurling, Football, Boxing, Rugby, Australian Rules football and athletics at elite levels for more than 10 years.  Having completed his undergraduate degree at UCC he completed his hospital training at Cork University Hospital.  Dr Falvey undertook a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Melbourne and a PhD at University College Cork.

Friday 28^th February 2014; Patrick Cotter, an Advanced  Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Nursing at Cork University Hospital is the first graduate of the Doctorate of Nursing Programme at the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork.

The excitement was palpable at UCC’s fourth Prep-for-Med day held on Friday 24th January at the School of Medicine, College of Medicine and Health, UCC and Cork University Hospital.

Professor Patricia Kearney, Research Professor at University College Cork, is one of six new HRB Research Leaders, appointed by The Health Research Board (HRB).  The investment of €9 million will address strategic gaps and leadership capacity in population health and health services research in Ireland.

Monday 25 November saw the launch of a book that many will want to get their teeth into. ‘Prevention is better than cure: History of the Cork Dental School and Hospital, 1913-2013’ was launched by Minister Kathleen Lynch T.D. in the Aula Maxima, UCC in honour of 2013 being the centenary of the founding of one of Cork's landmark institutions.

A HRB funded study at UCC suggests alcohol consumption in the first fifteen weeks of pregnancy does not alter odds for small-for-gestational-age neonate, reduced birth weight, preeclampsia, or spontaneous preterm birth.  The findings have just been published in ‘Obstetrics and Gynaecology’, one of the world’s leading Obstetrics and Gynaecology journals.

President of University College Cork, Dr. Michael Murphy, has today welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly TD, on the appointment of Prof. Geraldine McCarthy as Chairperson of the South/South West Hospital Group. Congratulating Prof. McCarthy on her appointment, President Murphy said, “Prof. McCarthy’s role will strengthen the linkages that already exist between the acute hospitals and University College Cork across the South/South West region.”

The first Irish national audit into the death of babies in the weeks before or after birth (known as perinatal mortality) was launched today (Tuesday 22 October). 

This national audit was carried out by the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (NPEC) based in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University College Cork for the calendar year 2011 in collaboration with the medical and midwifery staff from the individual maternity units around the country.

A new research initiative will position Ireland to play a central role in adding two healthy years of life to every European by 2020, EU Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn stated today (Tuesday October 15).

Professor Louise Kenny has won the Enterprise Ireland Life Sciences & Food Commercialisation Award for developing and commercialising the first predictive diagnosis for pre-eclampsia in early pregnancy.

Friday, 20th September 2013: Mr Seán Sherlock TD, Minister of State for Research and Innovation today (Friday) announced Government funding, through Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), of €7.6 million which will leverage a further investment of €6 million from 15 industry partners, for research at the Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Translational Research (INFANT), Cork. Ireland’s first centre for perinatal research will directly improve treatment and care for pregnant mothers and newborn babies.

An international consortium of Cystic Fibrosis clinicians and scientists, led by Dr Barry Plant of the College of Medicine and Health, Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and the HRB - Clinical Research Facility, University College Cork/Cork University Hospital, Ireland has launched a major EU-funded collaboration project focused on the development and trial of personalized antibiotic treatment for patients with CF during respiratory infections. CFMATTERS an acronym for ‘Cystic Fibrosis Microbiome-determined Antibiotic Therapy Trial in Exacerbations: Results Stratified’ will receive approximately €6 million in funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme.

25% of heart attacks and strokes are preventable

One in four deaths from coronary heart disease (CHD) or stroke could be prevented each year, according to new evidence from the Health Research Board Centre for Diet and Health. Such an outcome requires everyone in Ireland to cut their salt, trans fat and saturated fat intake and eat three more portions of fruit and veg per day.
