When a Raspberry Pi not a raspberry pie... SFI Researchers Celebrate the Power of Science!

3 Nov 2014

Not so long ago, a raspberry pie was something you enjoyed with cream or custard.   But in the fast moving world of science and technology,  Raspberry Pi has an entirely different meaning!  So if you are curious about the latest in science and technology then you should come along to some of the events at the new Celebrate Science Festival organised by eight SFI research centres and their colleagues.

With events all around the country taking place during Science week, from Nov 9th to 15th, Celebrate Science will have something for everyone of all ages, from robotics to photonics, from crystals to disgusting digestion, from nanotechnology to big data, from global warming to smashing science movies!

Celebrate Science kicks off in Cork with a  Family Open Day on Sunday November 9th in the UCC Western Gateway building with over 30 different workshops and displays for adults and children. Children and adults can choose from Lego Robotics, Light Fantastic, Disgusting Digestion, Maths and other workshops. There will be dancing robots, electric cars and Raspberry Pi.  While some of the events will appeal to younger kids (e.g. exploring the digestive tract of APC’s Alimentary Adventures tunnel  and some of the Lego workshops) many of the workshops and tours are for older teenagers and adults e.g. the tours of UCC Brewery and Bakery and the world-renowned Anatomy FLAME lab where our future doctors learn about the human body and the molecular biology workshops.   MaREI will give you an opportunity to track a mystery animal or test drive a remotely operated underwater vehicle or learn how your Xbox can be powered with renewable energy.  IPIC scientists will allow you to use their Explore Photonics kits to explore the fascinating science of light in their interactive workshops. At the Infant display you will be able to hear baby brainwaves with their musical stethoscope and check out their iPad app to monitor brain development.  If you want to see what you look like inside the MATRIX, visit the Insight Centre display area and get your own personalised computer-generated portrait! Or you might like to check out some of the displays by local industries.

Celebrate Science continues in Cork during Science Week with an Open Night at the amazing Tyndall National Institute on Wednesday 12th and Public Forums each evening including: “Climate Change and its Impacts; past, present and future” (Tuesday 11th),  “Superbugs: friends and foes” (from influenza to ebola to bacteria and mental health)(Wednesday 12th) and  “C-Sections; the risks and the benefits for mothers on babies” and school visits too (Thursday 13th).

All events are free but many events need to be booked in advance and are filling up fast, so log on to http://celebratescience.eu/events-2/cork/  to ensure your place!

Limerick Family Science Day will take place on Saturday 15th November beginning early in the day with science buskers at the Milk Market and followed by a full programme of  family science events at the Hunt Museum and finishing with a PubScience event at Locke’s Bar.  For more details on the Celebrate Science event in Limerick and to book a place on the workshops visit: http://celebratescience.eu/events-2/limerick/

Smashing Science Films will take place in Dublin’s CHQ building at the IFSC in Dockands from Thursday 13-Saturday 15th November. The films will include Particle Fever, Moneyball and The Man in the White Suit and will follow science research demonstrations each day. Additional films and teacher resources will also be available.  For more details on the Dublin Celebrate Science events and to book your place visit: http://celebratescience.eu/events-2/dublin/science-in-film/

Celebrate Science is organised by the education and public engagement staff of  8 SFI research Centres:   APC, AMBER, Infant, Insight, IPIC, Lero, MaREI & SSPC and is funded through  SFI Discover's Public Engagement programme. SFI researchers will be on hand at all events, giving workshops, manning the interactive displays and taking the opportunities to discuss their research informally at the Open Days.

All of the information on Celebrate Science week can be seen on our website www.celebratescience.eu.  Many of the events need to be booked, so don’t delay!
