National Intern Conference and Social
An incredible sixty per cent of Ireland's current cohort of 650 interns are scheduled to leave our shores over the coming months to seek better working conditions abroad. With this in mind, a team of interns from each of the National Intern Training Networks has organised an exciting line-up of speakers for the inaugural National Intern Conference and Social (#NICS14). This will take place in the Brookfield Centre, UCC, Cork on Saturday June 28th 2014.
The keynote speaker will be Senator Colm Burke, the Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson for Health, who has been vociferously critical of the deleterious effects of the "brain drain" of Irish doctors on our health service.
Prof Mary Horgan, who recently addressed the UCC graduands with an insightful and motivating speech as Dean of the Medical School, will chair a panel discussion that will scrutinise the motives behind the mass emigration of Irish NCHDs.
A medical technology and innovations session will be highlighted by Prof Carl Vaughan and Dr Ronan Kavanagh.
Prof Vaughan, clinical coordinator of the UCC Intern Training Network and renowned artist, will speak on the 'Five Innovations that have Changed his Practice'.
Dr Kavanagh, the Galway-based rheumatologist, musician, and blogger (ronankavanagh.ie), will discuss 'Lifelong Learning using New Technologies'.
Dr Nora McCarthy and Dr Cathal O'Connor will talk about the CLAS and Interno apps, exciting innovations devised to optimise clinical efficiency and patient safety. Their talks will demonstrate why UCC won first place at the National Social Media Awards this year.
Prof Daniel Mark Duffy, the Irish-American award-winning portrait artist, will provide a fascinating visual appreciation workshop, entitled 'Future Doctors with an Artist's Eye'.
A careers section, showcasing interesting and diverse specialties, will be presented by Prof Mick Molloy and Dr Jon Dallimore.
Prof Molloy, former Chief Medical Officer to the International Rugby Board, will talk on Sports Medicine as a specialty.
Dr Dallimore, co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine, will talk on working as an expedition doctor.
A posters section will display ground-breaking medical research undertaken by Ireland's current interns. The Dr John Walsh Research Foundation Award will be presented to the winning research, judged by an independent panel.
The event will continue at a black tie ball in aid of the Cork University Hospital Charity at the Rochestown Park Hotel that evening.
We welcome doctors of all grades and specialties, as well as other healthcare professionals. It is hoped that this will become an annual event.
