CoMH receives a Higher Distinction award for its outstanding workplace standards

College of Medicine and Health, UCC received a Higher Distinction award for its outstanding workplace standards at this year’s National Irish Safety Organisation Awards (ROI and NI) and it could not come at a better time. The award is indeed a fitting tribute to the huge work put in over the years by University Safety Officer Mr. John Ring who retires this week after 30 years managing all things safety at UCC.

A former civil engineering student of UCC John has worked as University Safety Officer providing safety management and compliance advice and supports to all FA and Schools (management and staff) since 1992.

Head of the College of Medicine and Health Professor Helen Whelton paid tribute to John and said the NISO award recognised the work John has put in over the years providing a safe and positive working environment for all.

“We want to thank him for that and wish him the very best in his retirement. It is indeed excellent timing to receive this award at this time. It is a great achievement and one that we at College of Medicine and Health are very proud of and I would like to thank John, our former college manager Kathryn Neville and all our staff who worked on this application. It is a great honour as it was the first time University College Cork and College of Medicine and Health entered this Competition so we are certainly heading in the right direction. 

John said he was delighted with this award which he said recognises the positive and proactive culture of safety in the College.

John said he is looking forward to retirement – “I’m delighted to be retiring and I look forward to working on my golf handicap and enjoying more holidays. I will miss the people at UCC, I have had some great years here but it is now time to move on to new adventures.”
