Dr. Éanna Falvey receives his PhD
Friday 28th February 2014; UCC Alumnus Dr. Éanna Falvey, Team Doctor to the Irish Senior Rugby Team and the Irish Amateur Boxing Association High Performance Unit receives his PhD.
Dr Falvey, MB BCh, PhD, MRCPI, MMedSci (SEM), FFSEM, has been involved in team coverage for Hurling, Football, Boxing, Rugby, Australian Rules football and athletics at elite levels for more than 10 years. Having completed his undergraduate degree at UCC he completed his hospital training at Cork University Hospital. Dr Falvey undertook a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Melbourne and a PhD at University College Cork.
The title of Dr Falvey’s PhD is "An Examination of the Role of Sports and Exercise Medicine Specialist in Ireland - from Epidemiology to Treatment”. This is the first work of its kind in Ireland examining issues around epidemiology, screening, the evidence base for treatment and the impact of injury prevention measures as they apply to the specialist in Sports & Exercise Medicine.
Dr Falvey is the Team Doctor to the Irish Senior Rugby Team and the Irish Amateur Boxing Association High Performance Unit since 2009, he was doctor to the British & Irish Lions tour 2013 and is a member of the International Rugby Board Pitch Side Concussion Assessment (PSCA) working group.
While an undergraduate at UCC Dr Falvey was the recipient of a sports scholarship for 3 years as captain of the UCC boxing team, as well as a number of ’sports star of the year awards'. He has been Irish senior super-heavyweight boxing champion, competed numerous times at international level and represented Ireland at the 2001 Senior World Amateur Boxing Championships.
In addition to his team physician experience Dr Falvey is Director of Sports Medicine at The Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin where in addition to a busy clinician he is involved in an extensive research programme investigating athletic groin pain, anterior cruciate ligament injury, low back pain and genetics in tendinopathy.
Professor Mary Horgan, Dean School of Medicine UCC congratulated Dr Falvey, “Today builds on Dr Falvey’s achievements in sports and exercise medicine. He is an active academic contributor in teaching the Sports and Exercise Masters programme (MMedSc) at UCC and is an advocate for Health and Wellbeing in the Irish population.” Dr Falvey has co-authored the medical text book “Clinical Sports Anatomy”, he is the author of numerous book chapters for the International Olympic Committee and has more than 20 pubmed cited original publications.
