If I knew then what I know now
If only I knew then what I know now - blog series by students, for students
My name is Leanne Ahern and I am delighted to be part of this new initiative by the Skills Centre entitled “If I knew then what I know now”. The aim of this initiative is to help new and returning students here at UCC to become familiar with the academic standards and protocols associated with third-level education. These blogs are aimed for all students including those transitioning from secondary school to first year of college, mature students returning to college, current students and masters students transitioning from an undergraduate degree. This blog series will cover a range of different topics which will be beneficial for students including how to read journal articles and develop new skills around academic writing.
Hi Everyone,
My name is Leanne Ahern and I am delighted to be part of this new initiative by the Skills Centre entitled “If I knew then what I know now”.
I should provide a little bit more information about my journey and what led me to be part of this initiative. I am 25 and I am originally from Limerick. I have just completed a two-year Masters in Physiotherapy here at UCC. Prior to my masters I completely a four-year undergraduate course in Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Limerick. Throughout my time in college, I completed two dissertations, one during my undergraduate degree and the other during my Masters degree both requiring a different style and depth of academic writing. I was very fortunate to have two older sisters, one who has completed a Professional Masters of Education and the other who is currently completed a PhD in Psychology. So, when it came to advice regarding academic writing not only did I have the option of seeking advice from my lecturers at UCC but I could also get extra advice from them. I am aware that not everyone has the option to get advice about academic writing from previous students, and this is what sparked the idea for this blog series.
Taking a new step in education can be daunting but this blog series is aimed to help each of you throughout your academic journey here at UCC, where I will share some tips and tricks I have picked up along to the way, because my background is in healthcare these blogs will be aimed towards the disciplines of healthcare and medicine but the information give in each blog can be applied to all disciplines.
Thanks everyone for reading and I will see you all in my next blog which will focus on how to correctly read a journal article.
See you soon,
Leanne
