The significance of humanities scholarship in challenging times

Discussion forum and reading group: next meeting 25 March 2021 (note revised date)

The next meeting of the discussion forum and reading group takes place on Thursday 25 March, 4-5 pm on Teams ('What keeps us going?' Humanities Discussion Forum). We invite all interested colleagues and postgraduate researchers in CACSSS to join us for an informal discussion, in which we exchange thoughts about our work in the humanities disciplines, sharing what matters to us as scholars and teachers, reflecting on our research as a source of continuity, consolation and critical insight in times of difficulty, and providing each other with support. Each meeting will take as its starting point a brief reading (texts to be pre-circulated and briefly introduced by their nominator). The texts for 25 March 2021 are excerpts from Simon Marginson, The Dream is Over: The Crisis of Clark Kerr's California Idea of Higher Education (2016) and Higher Education and the Common Good (2016). Copies are available in the 'Files' area of the Teams channel; or email d.fitzgibbon@ucc.ie to request a copy.

Remaining dates and texts for semester 2 are as follows:

Tuesday 30 March 4-5 pm: Hannah Arendt, 'The Crisis in Education' (1954)

Thursday 22 April 4-5 pm: bell hooks: 'Teaching to Transgress' (1994).

All are welcome to join. Please contact Caitríona Ní Dhúill (caitriona.nidhuill@ucc.ie) and / or Gert Hofmann (g.hofmann@ucc.ie) for further information or if you would like to suggest a text for discussion at a future meeting.
