AI can make pharma production cheaper and more efficient - researchers
22 Aug 2024Artificial Intelligence can be used to make drug production more efficient, economical, and sustainable, according to the international research team behind a groundbreaking new collaboration.
Scientists from UCC with academic and industry leaders from Ireland and the United States are part of a new initiative named ‘InTeleCat’, which aims to accelerate the development of pharmaceuticals. The team, led by Dr Gerard McGlacken of UCC’s School of Chemistry, is comprised of experts in the fields of catalysis, computational chemistry, and data science.

UCC College of Business and Law's Sustainability Showcase
01 Jul 2024The College of Business and Law at University College Cork recently hosted an insightful Sustainability Research Showcase, drawing over 50 attendees from across the university and featuring presentations from more than 30 researchers around several different sustainability topics. The showcase served as a platform to highlight a diversity of research activities and provided an opportunity for researchers from different areas to discuss a variety of key sustainability issues.

Would you take financial advice from an influencer on TikTok?
29 Jun 2024Recent research by the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland suggests that 23% of people in Ireland under the age of 35 use social media when looking for information about making future investments. Financial influencers – or "finfluencers" - offer free advice on everything from cash budgeting, saving, borrowing and debt (money advice) to investments (financial advice).
Finfluencers build their advice into content that is easy to understand, engaging, relatable and freely available. This advice can also be deemed to be educational and filling a void created by an absence – perceived or otherwise - of other such sources of advice.

13 Jun 2024UCC and KPMG hosted a Business Continuity Management (BCM) & Sustainability Symposium at the Aula Maxima this week Local, regional, and international industry experts exchanged their best practices and lessons learned from major to minor disruptions with peers and researchers.
Attendees gained valuable insights into BCM and sustainability strategies to stay ahead of the curve and help ensure their organizations are prepared for any business disruptions, from floods, cybersecurity attacks, and supply chain failures, to cascading events that will inevitably be faced. Our Rural Future: Minister Humphreys launches first ever bursary to support Masters Students in field of rural development
29 May 2024The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today launched a new bursary to support a number of Masters Students in the area of rural development.The initiative is being rolled out in partnership with our third level colleges and delivers upon a commitment in our five-year rural development policy, Our Rural Future.
As part of the initiative, six students will be supported with a bursary with a value of €60,000. The bursary was developed in collaboration with the Higher Education Institution Network which was established by the Department to encourage the wider take-up of rural development research at postgraduate level.

NIBRT and UCC collaborate to improve Advanced Therapeutics and Vaccine Development in Ireland
03 May 2024NIBRT (National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training) and UCC announced a strategic collaboration as part of the Future Pharmaceuticals initiative with the joint appointment of Professor Anne Moore, and Professor Elena Matsa as Principal Investigators at NIBRT and at the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology in UCC.
This partnership marks a significant step forward in advancing research excellence and fostering innovation in bioprocessing. It brings together formally for the first time the complementary expertise and experience within both NIBRT and UCC in research of relevance to biopharmaceuticals, and the strong track record in both institutions of collaborative engagement with the biopharmaceutical sector in Ireland and internationally.

Protecting our Oceans: The ShipFuel Research Project
19 Apr 2024As the world grapples with the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, the maritime industry has been lagging in its efforts to transition the shipping sector from relying on traditional fossil fuels to low-carbon alternatives.
In a landmark move for the Irish maritime sector, MaREI, the SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine in UCC and leading renewable energy consultants Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG) have announced the inception of the 'ShipFuel' research project. This pioneering initiative is set to position Ireland at the helm of maritime sustainability by developing a clear path to support the transformation of the shipping sector's reliance on traditional fuels to low-carbon alternatives.

Regeneron College Awards 2024
01 Mar 2024The Regeneron College Awards 2024 celebrated the achievements of outstanding UCC students at the Regeneron site in Raheen, Limerick. The awards honoured MSc Biotechnology students Stanford Lloyd Fernandez and Anna Carey for their excellent research projects.
MSc Biotechnolgoy students are invited to compete for these awards prior to the start of the college semester. Selected students have to design a project on a topic assigned by Regeneron and present it to a panel of industry experts, followed by a Q&A session where they could network with Regeneron staff.
