Mercy University Hospital on-site interprofessional initiative
A recent IPL session, held in the Mercy University Hospital in January 2024, centred around Stroke and the importance of a collaborative, patient centred approach.
PPI advocate and stroke survivor, Lucy Martin, not only contributed to the design of the case study, but also gave invaluable contributions in the delivery of the IPL workshop, which saw students from nursing, medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy come together to learn with, from and about each other’s roles. Lucy gave a powerful insight into her journey, and students got to hear the highs as well as the lows of a patient journey though the healthcare system. The preliminary feedback from the session was overwhelmingly positive, with particular reference to Lucy’s contribution as well as the collaborative and team-based approach to patient care that the students got to experience.
This is a rolling IPL initiative which continues to gain momentum. Significant work is undertaken to align student availability across the various programmes to ensure that students get this unique opportunity during their clinical placement. The next IPL workshop takes place in May 2024.
The steering group consists of: Nora McCarthy (School of Medicine, UCC), John Healy (on-site clinical educator, physiotherapy), Caoimhe Harrington (on-site practice tutor, UL), Olivia Wall (senior community OT, HSE), Miriam Ó Tuathaigh (senior OT, CUH), Ciaran Evans (on-site nursing tutor, MUH), Aaron Cole (practice tutor, physiotherapy, UCC) and Trish O’Sullivan (practice tutor, physiotherapy, UCC).
