Congratulations to Dr. James Collins, who was conferred with a PhD (Medicine and Health) at the College of Medicine and Health Autumn conferring ceremony on the 28th October 2022.

James carried out his PhD in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and APC Microbiome Ireland at University College Cork. He defended his PhD thesis entitled ‘Novel insights into early life stress-induced dysfunction of the gut-brain axis’ under the supervision of Dr. Siobhain O’Mahony and Prof. John F. Cryan. His thesis investigated the behavioural and physiological impacts of exposure to stress early in life and the potential of novel treatment approaches in mitigating these negative effects.

Prior to beginning his PhD research, James graduated with a BSc (Hons) Neuroscience from the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in University College Cork. James’ final year project focused on ‘Sex differences in hippocampal neurogenesis and its regulation by the stress hormone corticosterone’ supervised by Dr. Olivia O’Leary. The purpose of this research was to investigate inherent sex differences in how the stress hormone corticosterone alters the formation of new neurons in the brain.

Dr. Collins is currently Co-Head of Medical Affairs in a medical publishing company in the Netherlands. He can be found on twitter @JCollinsNeuro.
