Congratulations to Dr Siobhain O’Mahony Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience who recently travelled to Finland to present her work at a Minisymposium “Brain-Gut-Microbiome axis” in the University of Turku. The symposium was held by FinnBrain-a research project studying the combined influence of environmental and genetic factors on the development of a child.

In a study led by Cryan, anxious mice dosed with the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus rhamnosus (JB-1) showed lower levels of anxiety, decreased stress hormones, and even an increase in brain receptors for a neurotransmitter that’s vital in curbing worry, anxiety, and fear.

The 6th European Workshop on Cannabinoid Research took place at Trinity College Dublin from Thursday 18th to Saturday 20th April. The conference was organised by the British Pharmacological Society (BPS) together with Irish cannabinoid researchers and was the largest and most high profile scientific conference on cannabis and cannabinoids ever held in Ireland.

27 Sep 2013Recently-formed Parkinson’s Disease Research Cluster (PDRC). Co-founded by Dr Gerard O’Keeffe and Dr Aideen Sullivan in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, and Dr Sean O’Sullivan in the Department of Neuroscience, Cork University Hospital have successfully been awarded funding under the 2012 Translational Research Access Programme, which relates to a study titled “Potential biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease: comparison of levels of neurotrophic factors in cerebrospinal fluid and serum of Parkinson’s disease patients with those in healthy controls.”
