Biosciences Imaging Centre Staff

The Biosciences Imaging Centre was established and is operated by staff of the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience. The department has a long history of excellence in research and has established its Imaging Centre as a means by which other departments in UCC and users from the private sector, have access to its considerable collection of research microscopes, equipment and expertise.  The Biosciences Imaging Centre is located on the Ground Floor of the BioSciences Institute.

The staff of the Biosciences Imaging Centre would be pleased to hear from you to discuss your microscopy research interest.  Please contact  Dr André Toulouse Imaging Centre Manager to discuss your imaging requirements.

Suzanne Crotty is a Senior Technical Officer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC. She works primarily in the BioSciences Imaging Centre, located in the BioSciences Institute. Suzanne looks after the day to day running of the BioSciences Imaging Centre and supports researchers’ microscopy requirements.

Suzanne graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. in Neuroscience from University College Cork. She worked in the biotechnology sector before taking up this technical post in the university.

Suzanne is experienced in both electron and light microscopy. She has expertise in fluorescence microscopy including wide-field, confocal and two-photon microscopes. Suzanne has a strong research background in the preparation of biological specimens for microscopy, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

Suzanne, as part of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience’s BioSciences Imaging Centre, provides a microscopy service for staff and researchers throughout the university, and also investigators from other universities and from industry. Services provided at the BioSciences Imaging Centre include a wide range of microscopy techniques, specimen preparation (of biological or materials samples) and microscopy training.

Suzanne’s main areas of expertise are:

  • Brightfield and Fluorescence Microscopy
  • Confocal Microscopy
  • Multiphoton Microscopy
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy
  • Ultramicrotomy
  • Specimen preparation for Widefield, Confocal and Electron Microscopy
  • Widefield and Electron Microscopic Immunocytochemistry
  • Elemental analysis (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy)
  • Planning of experiments involving microscopy, morphometry and stereology
