Rory Corbett

Biography

Rory James Corbett was born in New York in 1988. In 1996 he moved to the North-West of Ireland, where he lived until moving to Cork last year. Rory specialises in clawhammer banjo and performs regularly throughout Ireland. He also co-authored the publication “‘A Uniting Force’ Irish Music on U.S. Radio” (Dempsey, Geagan and Corbett 2016). 
 
Rory is a previous 1st class honours graduate of the B.A. with Irish Studies in NUI Galway and a recent 1st class honours graduate of the Ethnomusicology M.A. in UCC's Department of Music. Rory was twice awarded UCC's Excellence Scholarship, first for the completion of his M.A. and then again for his PhD, which he is currently completing in the Department of Music in UCC under the co-supervision of Dr. Tríona Ní Shíocháin and Dr. J. Griffith Rollefson. Rory’s doctoral thesis is titled “A Darker Shade of Green" and it investigates the cultural symbiosis of Irish and blackface minstrel music in the years between 1812 and 1852.
