 ‘1514 - 2014 The Legacy of Andreas Vesalius Symposium & Art Exhibition'  took place on Tuesday 21^st October 2014 at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC.

Organised by Dr Andre Toulouse, lecturer Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, The Legacy of Andreas Vesalius Symposium and Art Exhibiton took place in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex UCC on Tuesday 21^st October. The Symposium was followed by the opening of the Art Exhibition in the Jennings Gallery.

The Legacy of Andreas Vesalius Symposium & Art Exhibition celebrates the work of the great anatomist and medical educator, Andreas Vesalius, 500 years after his birth. Vesalius’ seminal publication of 1543, “De Humani Corporis Fabrica” represented one of the greatest historical shifts in medicine and the way it was taught. The symposium welcome address was given by Professor Mary Horgan, Dean School of Medicine UCC and Professor John Cryan, Chair, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience UCC.

Symposium speakers included Professor Vivian Nutton, Centre for the History of Medicine,University College, London. Professor John Fraher, Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience,University College Cork, Dr Jason Harris, Department of History, University College Cork, Professor Clive Lee, Department of Anatomy, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dr Hiram Morgan, Department of History, University College Cork, Professor Michael Maher, Department of Radiology, University College Cork. Closing remarks were addressed by Dr Siún O’Flynn, Medical Education Unit, School of Medicine, University College Cork.

‌The exhibition features special reprints of Vesalius’ wonderful anatomical drawings and compares them with modern anatomical drawings. The exhibition also features a display of anatomical instruments.
The Vesalius Exhibition was opened by Professor John Higgins, Head College of Medicine and Health, UCC and will remain open until 1^st December.
