Dr O'Mahony conferred with Honorary Fellowship by the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland

Dr Siobhain O'Mahony being conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by Dr Hugh Gallagher, Chair of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, College of naesthesiologists of Ireland

Dr Siobhain O’Mahony, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and Principal Investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland, was conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the College of Anaesthesiologists Ireland Faculty of Pain, at a formal ceremony in College of Anaesthesiologists in Merrion Square, Dublin on the 21st June 2024.

This is the highest award that the College of Anaesthesiologists can make. The President of the College along with College Council consider eminent individuals for the award who have given outstanding service to the specialty of anaesthesia, intensive care medicine and pain medicine over many years and are renowned internationally. Dr O'Mahony was recognised by College of Anaesthesiologists for her 20 years of work in the area of the microbiome and pain.

Dr O'Mahony is a long-standing member of the Irish Pain Society and organised the very successful Irish Pain Society Annual Meeting in UCC in October 2023 which was held in Cork over two days and was the largest attended meeting in the history of the Society.

Preceding the award ceremony Dr Siobhain O'Mahony was invited to deliver the "The Francis Rynd lecture" at the College of Anaesthesiologists Annual Congress in UCD on the 24th of May 2024. Dr O'Mahony's lecture entitled "The Microbiome in Pain Medicine: Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Potential" included discussion on her latest publication in collaboration with Professor George Shorten.  Dr O'Mahony detailed how the gut microbiota can be used to predict persistent post-operative pain following breast cancer surgery . The session was sponsored by St Vincent's Anaesthesia Foundation.
