Congratulations Dr Mutahira Lone winner of the John Kelly Award for Outstanding Innovations in Teaching in Further and Higher Education

Congratulations to Dr Mutahira Lone, Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy who was presented with the John Kelly award for Outstanding Innovations in Teaching in Further and Higher Education.
University College Dublin (UCD) and the Association for Higher Education Access & Disability (AHEAD) recognize outstanding innovations in teaching annually with the John Kelly Awards for Universal Design in Further and Higher Education. Named in honour of the late Professor John Kelly, former UCD Registrar and founding Chair of AHEAD, these awards celebrate teaching practices that exemplify the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework, promoting inclusive and accessible learning experiences for students.
Organized by Atlantic Technological University Sligo who are the current holder of the John Kelly Collaborative Award the 'Annual Universal Design for Learning Conference, Climbing the UDL Ladder: Practical Approaches to Embedding UDL in Tertiary Education ' was held on Friday, 25th October, at ATU Sligo.
The John Kelly Awards feature both Individual and Collaborative categories, evaluated through a multi-stage process. Applications undergo initial screening by AHEAD and UCD Access & Lifelong Learning, followed by scoring by an international panel of experts. Shortlisted finalists were then invited to present their projects at the conference where the overall winners were announced.
Dr Lone presented her Universal Design for Learning (UDL) presentation 'Implementing UDL at the Heart of Teaching and Assessment' which showcased her module redesign on the innovative teaching methods which she developed for dental students. This module redesign has led to multiple poster and paper publications for several students, including two undergraduate dental students and two master's students. With interactive props including 3D animation and 3D printed human teeth Dr Lone was awarded the prize from a very competitive cohort of shortlisted presenters.
A dentist and anatomist, Dr Lone has distinguished herself through her commitment to UDL, earning the Digital Badge for Universal Design in Teaching and Learning in 2021, followed by the Level 1 UDL Associate credential from CAST. Currently, she is expanding her expertise through the “GenAI for Teaching and Learning: How To Do It Right?” course offered by the Higher Education Authority and National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

A passionate teacher, Dr Lone's research interests include the study of innovative ways to teach anatomy and dental anatomy, combining traditional teaching method with innovative ways to introduce blended learning approaches, introducing the concepts of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the teaching environment. In 2017 Dr Lone was awarded a PhD for her thesis 'Investigating innovative ways to teach anatomy to dental students'.
Dr. Lone's ongoing research on innovative anatomy teaching has received funding from the Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE), supporting her work with dental students as partners and co-researchers. This project reflects her dedication to fostering an engaging and inclusive learning environment that prepares her students to excel.
Dr Lone was awarded a master’s degree in Dental Public Health (MDPH) from the College of Medicine and Health in University College Cork in 2011, PhD in Anatomy in 2017 and a Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (MATHLE) from the Centre for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) in University College Cork in October 2021. In 2017 she was appointed lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in 2017, lecturing to Graduate Entry Medical students (GEM) and MSc Radiography students. In 2019 she was appointed programme coordinator on the recently introduced MSc Human Anatomy, a 12 month taught masters degree. Dr Lone lectures to the MSc Human Anatomy students and lectures on the dental morphology, embryology and histology to undergraduate dental students. As a research supervisor Dr Lone supervises MSc students' research projects in addition to dental research projects.
