European Hospital and Healthcare Federation (HOPE) Exchange Programme
The theme, "Keeping our Health Workforce", focused on addressing staff shortages in healthcare by emphasising retention through education, training, and research.
On May 29th 2024, the College of Medicine and Health, UCC, in collaboration with the South SouthWest Hospital Group (SSWHG), hosted this year's participants of the European Hospital and Healthcare Federation (HOPE) exchange programme.
This initiative promotes knowledge exchange within the EU. Healthcare professionals from Germany, Portugal, Austria, and Finland, including two doctors, a radiology technologist, and a senior nurse, visited Cork as part of the programme.
Participants engaged in four days of meetings with SSWHG and Cork University Hospital, and one day of activities hosted by UCC.
Here in the SouthWest Region, we are working to develop a fully coordinated Academic Health Science System (AHSS). An AHSS integrates quality care with teaching, training, research, and innovation across the healthcare workforce. The tours and presentations highlighted the benefits of an AHSS, our regional efforts to implement such a system, and the approaches taken in the participants' own hospitals.
Under the expert guidance of Dr Michael Cronin, Industry Liaison Officer, ASSERT, the participants were truly impressed by the simulation-based training facilities at the ASSERT Simulation Centre. They had an informative discussion with SSWHG Simulation Lead Dr Rory O’Brien about the role of simulation and opportunities available to healthcare staff within SSWHG.
Engaging presentations on research-active institutes and the benefits to staff of accredited centres of excellence were delivered by Dr Rafaela Carapeto, Research Manager SSWHG; Dr Claire O'Regan, Project Manager in Cancer@UCC; and Ms Nickola Pallin, HRB SPHeRE PhD scholar.
