Irish Maths Talent Celebrated at Mathematical Trust Awards 2024
Staff from the School of Mathematical Sciences played host to maths scholars and educators from all over Ireland at the Irish Mathematical Trust (IMT) Awards, in the Aula Maxima on 25 May.
The IMT Awards is an annual celebration of Irish maths talent, honouring students and teachers from all around the country. It is the culmination of a multitude of volunteer hours and out-of-school work by all involved.
Dr. Leo Creedon, President of the Irish Mathematical Society, welcomed teachers, students, parents, and academics to the event. Dr. Bernd Kreussler highlighted the significant work done by IMT volunteers, while Prof. Stephen Buckley acted as the Master of Ceremonies. Special musical performances were provided by students and UCC staff.
The Award for Irish Teachers of Mathematics was initiated in 2017, due to generous sponsorship from Frank Kenny through the Mary Vesey Fund at The Community Foundation for Ireland. The 2024 winner is Mary Frawley, teacher at Laurel Hill Secondary School FCJ who was awarded a trophy and a prize of €10,000.
Irish Mathematical Olympiad Awards:
The Irish Mathematical Olympiads is a national competition for school students, with more than 15,000 taking part in round 1 in schools and about 100 competing in round 2 in six Maths Enrichment centres. Students who competed in the competitions were recognised at the awards ceremony.
UCC works closely with the Irish Mathematical Trust and the School of Mathematical Sciences partners with them to offer extra-curricular activities for students of all ages.
Support from the Mary Vesey Fund at the Community Foundation for Ireland plays a crucial role in rewarding, motivating, and training students. Its support aims to prepare students for future participation in international olympiads.
The Irish Mathematical Trust also expressed gratitude for the sponsorship provided by the Susquehanna International Group. This support benefits both the Irish Mathematical Olympiad and the Irish team participating in the International Mathematical Olympiad in July 2024.
