RIBA European Award for ERI building, UCC.

UCC's Environmental Research Institute which brings together marine ecologists, environmental engineers and energy scientists is a genuinely green building.  Set on the flood plain of the Lee, it has a simple almost monastic quality using a palette of raw natural materials.  There is no boiler with 80% of the building's hot water supplied by solar collectors on the roof, while photovoltaic cells generate energy for computers and artifical lighting.

The ERI building was one of thirteen to receive this years RIBA European award for Sustainable Energy Buildings.
