Optical bursts in an accreting neutron star

30 Jun 2025

Dr. Mark Kennedy, School of Physics, UCC has led a study on modelling the aftershocks felt by a star due to the thermonuclear explosion which occurs on the surface of a nearby neutron star.

The study involves data taken using the worlds largest telescope, and is co-authored by 21 others based in Ireland, UK, USA, Finland, Netherlands and Australia.

The paper, which is published in the Open Journal of Astrophysics, can be accessed here: https://astro.theoj.org/article/140729-analysis-of-optical-spectroscopy-and-photometry-of-the-type-i-x-ray-bursting-system-uw-crb
