UCC Refugee Week 2024

UCC's Annual Refugee Week starts on Monday 19th February!

As a University of Sanctuary, we invite you to join us next week at UCC’s seventh annual Refugee Week, which will explore areas such as Scholars at Risk, the rise of the Far Right, EU governance of forced migration, the impact on identity language has for migrants (for International Mother Language Day on Feb 21st), and child trafficking.

Community focus will be on areas such as inclusion and integration for migrant children in schools with IMMERSE and Schools of Sanctuary, and facilitating integration with Graham Clifford.

Social events include a Sanctuary Run, Fáilte Refugees quiz night and a very possible dip in the Atlantic with Sanctuary Swimmers. There will also be art, film, music and poetry events, in which you may take part if you wish (e.g. the VERY open mic night on Friday 23rd).

And we are delighted to welcome the UNHCR to UCC to mark the very first Open Book Day: Celebrating Refugees in Education, with a panel discussion, From Global to Local – Refugees and Education on Thursday 22nd.

As a precurser, Dr Gertrude Cotter welcomes you to a workshop in ORB 2.12 at 5-7 p.m. Tuesday 13th FebFacilitators Fionnuala O Connell, a Liberian Irish artist, and Raphael Charif, a Cork-based artist and final year Occupational Therapy student in UCC, will take you through "Embracing Identity: Navigating Racism, Stigma, and Equity", exploring microaggressions, artistic expression, equity/equality, confronting stigma and stereotypes and more.  If interested, please email gertrude.cotter@ucc.ie

We would like to thank ALL of the contributors to this year’s line-up.  We couldn’t do it without you.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!
