President's Athena SWAN Symposium

The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research. In May 2015 the charter was expanded to include work undertaken in the arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. It is important to note that the charter has broadened to engage with gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women. 

In addition to the core consideration of gender equality, our symposium is taking intersectionality as a key focus and is keen to explore the ways in which gender crosscuts a myriad other factors including ethnicity, religious identity, class, age among other considerations.

Friday March 8th

18:00 Opening of symposium by UCC President Prof Patrick O'Shea, UCC with keynote speaker, Prof Pat O’Connor, UL, featureing also the presentaiton of the Naratives of Aequality awards and the annual Athena SWAN Equality Award.

Saturday March 9th

09:30 Opening of day's events with brief address of welcome

9:45-11:00 Roundtable discussion with MAWS founders and alumni about the programme and its applicability, academic contribution to gender equality and the changing landscape of gender equality since the inception of the course (participants to be invited by Board of MAWS – confirmed to date are Dr Sandra McAvoy and Dr Liz Steiner-Scott, and former students Michael Rowan and Dr Liz Kyte

COFFEE – 15 minutes

11:15-13:00 Workshop on Ethnicity/Gender Intersectionality facilitated by Advance HE

LUNCH – 60 minutes

14:00-16:00

Keynote by Prof Maggie O’Neill, Sociology, UCC "Borders, Risk and Belonging: challenges for art-sbased research in understanding intersectionality in the lives of women asylum seekers and migrants"

Followed by panel discussion "Perspectives on intersectionality and gender equality" –  confirmed panellists Senator Ivana Bacik, Dr Brigid Quilligan, Irish Traveller activist, Rola Abu Zeid O’Neill UCC, Dr Judy Walsh UCD & Patrick Sheehy, J&J.  Moderator: Dr Amanullah De Sondy, UCC

16:00-16:15 - Closing remarks
