CIRTL Series

CIRTL Series sessions explore a wide range of Teaching & Learning topics, and are open to the entire UCC community; they are typically one hour long and are facilitated by CIRTL team members and/or partners.

2023/24

Semester 1

The theme being advanced in the Semester 1 CIRTL Seminar Series is "Co-Creating Inclusion and Equity in Teaching and Learning". Presenters in these four sessions will share insights and spark discussions building on work underway as part of the HEA funded project to support universally designed higher education environments for all. Visit the project webpages for further details.

Anna Santucci and Bonnie Mullinix Teaching & Appreciative Inquiry: Co-creating Inclusion, Equity and Agency at UCC

DIECA Focus groups (slides)
How do individual identities, experiences, values and perspectives inform our role and practice as an educator? What impact can we have on and with the UCC community as we foster more inclusive and equitable teaching and learning landscapes? How might we nurture our continued growth as intentional change agents?

This session will immerse participants in a collaborative exploration through participatory reflective dialogue. This interactive session is part of the Co-creating Equity and Inclusion project’s research and activities. The project aims to build capacity towards institutional transformation through co-defining terms and co-imagining Continued Professional Development (CPD) opportunities that support educator’s agency and vision for a more inclusive and equitable teaching and learning ecosystem at UCC.

CIRTL Pedagogical Partners: Insights from the Pilot Project

Pedagogical partners (slides)

Are you interested in working more closely with students as partners to build increasingly inclusive and equitable learning experiences at UCC? Come hear more about this new CIRTL Initiative focused on transformative co-creation between students and staff!

In this session we will share  an overview of the origins, design and foundations for the CIRTL Pedagogical Partners Project. Whether you are new to this idea, remember hearing something about this last May, or are considering joining us as a Teacher Partner in the future, you are welcome to bring your curiosity and questions to this seminar. Partner Coordinators, Student Partners and Teacher Partners will be on hand to share how the unique perspectives and identities of students are offering insights into classroom dynamics and instructional practices that can enhance learning for all.

Approaches to Equitable Assessment of Learning: Exploring Ideas from UCC Colleagues

Register via the following link:
https://forms.office.com/e/MvLwnXe50W
An equitable and culturally responsive approach to assessment is needed in higher education as increasingly diverse student populations come to University. One barrier to student success in the Irish context is the continued preponderance of so-called ‘traditional assessments’ (O’Neil & Padden, 2022). Approaches to inclusive and equitable assessment are an appropriate response, and frameworks such as Universal Design for Learning and Trauma-informed, Feminist, Anti-racist, and Decolonizing Pedagogies can offer helpful principles for this work.

This seminar will feature a panel of invited UCC colleagues who will share examples of how they have adapted their assessment practices to better support  the learning of diverse students. They will address the barriers and enablers they encountered in diversifying assessment as well as the benefits, successes and/or challenges in doing so. Please join us for what we hope will be an informative and stimulating dialogue.

Have you ever considered engaging others with interpreting research findings and considering recommendations and next steps? This session actively invites participants to join such a process, modeling one way of engaging participants in interpreting and confirming findings and suggesting recommendations and next steps. This session will immerse participants in an interpretive analysis session aimed at capturing insights that help move static data into responsive action.

This session closes out the Seminar Series for semester one by diving into data generated across the seminar series sessions to engage participants in better understanding the findings and co-creating a vision for developing CPD offerings that foster change agency for inclusive, equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning at UCC. Participants will be invited to reflect on the activity and approach and consider how they might use it in their own teaching inquiry or participatory research processes.

Please register in advance of this event as we need to plan ahead regarding materials and catering order. Please let us know, with sufficient notice, if you are unable to attend following registration and we will make your space available to others and/or adjust our catering order accordingly.

Academic Integrity and Assessment Design

Fostering a culture of academic integrity brings focus to the process of learning and the benefits of this, highlighting the importance of developing skills and taking pride in your own work (not just the mark). While academic integrity has come under increasing threat from the prevalence of predatory contract cheating services and advances in artificial intelligence, there are steps we can take in our assessment design to mitigate these risks.

This workshop highlights several of the primary reasons behind why academic misconduct occurs and outlines preventative actions that can be taken regarding assessment design to foster academic integrity, including practice examples Engineering and Economics. Finally details of the upcoming AI² (Academic Integrity and Artificial Intelligence) project will be shared and an overview provided of academic integrity supports and resources in UCC.

March 14, 2.00pm-3.30pm Sarah Thelen, CIRTL and contributors Process and Product: (Re)designing Assessments

A key part of learning is the steps taken and decisions made as students go through drafts or prototypes, rewrites or redesign leading towards the final submission. Yet these processes are rarely seen, much less captured. This session explores the tools and approaches which can be used when (re)designing assessments to capture both process and product.
