What is Sanctuary? Exploring Experiences of Sanctuary in Ireland

UCC Fáilte Refugees will organise and host a conference on Thursday, 6th of February in the Aula Maxima at 6pm. The event will run in association with the university-wide initiative of 'Refugee Week' which will take place throughout the week starting February 3rd.

Two panels of speakers will be invited to discuss their thoughts on, "What is Sanctuary?" and share their experiences of creating 'Spaces of Sanctuary.' The first panel will welcome speakers from the asylum seeking community and will explore their experiences of sanctuary in Ireland and the second panel will include community organisers and activists that work in creating spaces of Sanctuary Each speaker will have 10 to 15 minutes to share their thoughts, following that, a Q and A.

Confirmed speakers include Dr Máire Leane, Chair UCC University of Sanctuary Working Group, a representative from KASI (Killarney Immigrant Support center,) Vera stojanovic and Dr. Naomi Masheti. More speakers will be confirmed in the coming days.

We hope the conversations will draw on the experiences of individuals and organisations who have established and benefitted from spaces of sanctuary within Irish society and who are working towards positive community engagement and meaningful support for migrants, asylum seekers and refugees and help raise awareness about the issues that occur and explore what can be done to work on resolving them.

Free - all welcome. Organised by Fáilte Refugees UCC
