Workshops for Equality Week

The EDI Unit in collaboration with staff, students and external bodies, ran a number of workshops during Equality Week 2023.

On Monday 2nd, as a joint venture with UCCSU SHAG Week, Dr Caroline West from Active* Consent gave an in-person workshop on IBSA (Image-Based Sexual Abuse) in the Dora Allman Room.

And on Thursday 5th we held two online workshops:

Communication in an International Context with the Language Centre and Accessible Presentations with the NCBI.

Julie Butters from the Language Centre led participants through the Ins and Outs of intercultural communicaiton. With a diverse multicultural and multilingual staff and student body here at UCC, it is important that we each strive to become skilled communicators, aware of how we use English as a working language in our university and equipped to adapt where necessary. This workshop will provide you with an enhanced understanding of how we can better communicate in linguistically diverse organisations and teams. It will also provide you with real-world examples and opportunities to put this knowledge into practice, focusing on spoken communication.

Shane and Martina from the NCBI gave a workshop on accessible presenting.  In this workshop, they covered all the do's and don'ts of accessibility and inclusiveness when presenting to a diverse audience. Participants also got hands-on experience working on the PowerPoint template and implementing best practices.
