The Secular University with Professor Simon Goldhill (April 4th)

28 Mar 2019
Professor Simon Goldhill, University of Cambridge

What does a secular university look like?  Join us on Thursday April 4th to find out!

In 2017-2018, UCC was an IHREC pilot for implementation of the Public Sector Equality and Human Rights Duty.  One of the issues identified was that, though UCC is a university that welcomes all creeds and faiths, in practice it still centres around the Christian calendar.  So the question remains: As a university that breaks for Easter and ring-fences staff holidays for Christmas, what does UCC being a secular university mean?  In 2018, we published the Diversity Calendar to draw attention to the rhythms of religious and other forms of diversity on campus and beyond.  This coming Thursday, April 4th, we plan on exploring this topic (What is a secular university?  What does it look like?  How do we get there?) further with Professor Simon Goldhill from the University of Cambridge.  Come and listen to his talk in BHSC G04 at 4pm, followed by an exploration of the issue further in conversation with Dr Amanullah De Sondy.

Register here to be sure of a place.

We look forward to seeing you,
