Mná@UCC celebrated its 1st year anniversary on November 4th which was marked by their 1st AGM.

The Chair, Dr. Siobhán Lucey provided an overview of the network's first year and forthcoming activities with UCC’s new Director of UCC’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Unit, Dr. Avril Hutch giving the closing address.

Mná@UCC's first 21/22 speaker event took place on October 19th 2021 (please see attached photo) where Dr. Mary Favier spoke on her journey to date titled "You’ll never work in this town again…".  Dr. Favier spoke about her journey through medicine and medical politics starting with her role in the junior doctors' strike of 1987, via her beginnings in North Kerry, through Doctors for Choice, Repeal, President of the ICGP and her current role on NPHET.   Her talk was enthralling and inspirational, giving great insight into how instrumental Mary's work has been in changing the political and cultural landscape with regard to women's health issues in Ireland over the past 30 years.  Mary's story began in New Zealand, moving with her family to Ballylongford in North Kerry as a child and going on to studying Medicine in UCC. It was while at UCC Mary became involved in politics, advocating for overtime pay for Junior Doctors in the 1980's.  Once known as the "Amendment Tart" she is now better known as the "Corona Queen" as a member of NPHET.  Mary is a UCC medical graduate and now is a general practitioner, and senior partner and GP trainer in a four-doctor practice in Cork city. Mary is an immediate past president of the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) and a member of the current National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET). She is a current member of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) GP committee and a former member of the Medical Council.  Mary is a former board member of the Medical Protection Society (MPS) and is co-founder of Doctors for Choice Ireland and Co-Chair of Global Doctors for Choice. Mary is an early medical abortion provider in her GP practice in Cork.

Mná@UCC in conjunction with Mr. Maeve Lankford and funded by UCC's Staff, Sports and Social Club will hold a workshop for Mná@UCC members titled "4 Strategies to Find Your Voice, Communicate Your Value & Thrive at Work" on Thursday December 2nd, 2021.  Further details can be obtained from Mná@UCC at mna@ucc.ie.
