A Space to Inspire: Cosmic Stories

The UCC EPONA committee, which stands for Equal Physics Opportunities Network in Academia (a UCC Physics Society subcommittee), is a group that aims to foster diversity, inclusion, and equality in academic physics.

On the 4th of March, we are holding an evening of talks at UCC, open to the public, given by notable women in physics and science.

The talks will include three distinguished guest speakers including Dame Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Doctor Niamh Shaw and UCC's Professor Denise Gabuzda, who will speak about their experiences as women in physics/science. By doing so, we hope to inspire women to have the confidence to pursue their interests in science and physics.

Prof Jocelyn Bell Burnell is credited with the discovery of radio pulsars as a PhD student, which was one of the most significant scientific achievements of the 20th century. Her groundbreaking achievements were not recognised in the Nobel Prize awarded for the discovery of pulsars, but came later in 2018 when she was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. Following the announcement of the award, she dedicated the entirety of the £2.3 million prize to help female, minority, and refugee students in physics.

Also speaking at the event is Dr Niamh Shaw, an award winning STEM communicator, scientist, engineer, writer and performer who aims to visit space.

Prof Denise Gabuzda from the UCC Physics Department will also be talking about her career studying active galactic nuclei with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI).
