Hostile Terrain '94

Hostile Terrain 94 is a participatory art project sponsored and organized by the Undocumented Migration Project, a non-profit research-art-education-media collective, directed by UCLA-based anthropologist Jason De Léon.

The exhibition is composed of 3,200 handwritten toe tags that represent undocumented migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert between Mexico and the US state of Arizona between the mid-1990s and 2019.  

These tags are geolocated on a map of the desert showing the exact locations where remains were found. 

This installation is running simultaneously a large number of institutions, both in the USA and globally in 2020, and we are delighted that the Glucksman Gallery here at UCC is one such venue where the exhibition forms part of the IRC-funded project, The Missing: Promoting Inter-Disciplinary Dialogue Between Forensic Practitioners, Researchers, and the Arts.

As part of the official launch of the participatory art exhibition, Hostile Terrain 94, you are invited to a panel discussion that will reflect on the role of art in recent border histories in the region.
