Students Showcase Summer Research and Internship Achievements at SEFS New Connections Event

Students from across UCC's College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS) and Tyndall National Institute gathered on 27 August for the SEFS New Connections: Summer Bursaries and Internships Showcase 2026, celebrating a summer of research, innovation and professional development.

The showcase provided students with an opportunity to present the projects, research findings and experiences that shaped their summer placements, highlighting the breadth of activity taking place across the College and Tyndall.

This year, SEFS supported 18 Summer Bursaries across the College and Tyndall National Institute, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in research environments and explore topics connected to some of society's most important challenges. The event also welcomed summer interns from SEFS schools.

Throughout the showcase, students shared insights from projects spanning a wide range of disciplines. Their presentations demonstrated how research and innovation experiences can complement academic study, helping students develop practical skills, build professional networks and gain a deeper understanding of potential career paths.

The event reflected SEFS's commitment to creating opportunities for students to engage with research beyond the classroom and contribute to ongoing academic and industry-focused initiatives.

A key factor in the success of the programme has been the dedication of the staff who coordinate and support it. Particular thanks were extended to Dr Sarah O'Connell, Dr Hui Wang and Professor Gerard McGlacken for their leadership and commitment in creating opportunities for students and bringing this year's showcase to fruition.

The knowledge, experience and confidence gained through these bursaries and internships will support students as they continue their studies and prepare for future careers in science, engineering and technology.
