Dr Luca Longo appointed to Royal Irish Academy Engineering and Computer Sciences Committee

Dr Luca Longo, School of Computer Science and Information Technology, UCC has been appointed to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA)'s Engineering and Computer Sciences Committee. 

The Royal Irish Academy's multidisciplinary and standing committees bring together leading experts from across Ireland and beyond to support research, inform public discourse, promote scholarship, and strengthen international collaboration.

Appointments for the 2026-2030 multidisciplinary committee term were made following a highly competitive open call, recognising individuals with outstanding expertise in their fields and a strong track record of public engagement.

Dr Luca Longo is a recognised leader in artificial intelligence, with expertise spanning AI, deep learning, argumentation theory, brain-computer interfaces, explainable AI, and computational models of cognitive load. Alongside his research, he is a dedicated science communicator, engaging public audiences through talks and contributions to TED. 

He is the founder of the World Conference on Explainable Artificial Intelligence and was named AI Person of the Year 2023. Dr Longo has also been recognised for excellence in teaching, receiving Ireland's Teaching Hero Award in 2016 and 2021.
