European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics 2026
Staff from UCC's School of Mathematical Sciences coached the Irish team that competed at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI) 2026, held in Cesenatico, Italy, from 12–18 May.
The Irish team, Beatrice Cesonyte, Afric Deasy, and Nicole Cheng, competed in a highly challenging international field, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication in one of the fastest-growing areas of STEM.
In an outstanding performance, Afric Deasy came close to securing a bronze medal, narrowly missing out in what was an exceptionally competitive competition.
The advanced training programme was coordinated by Dr Sabin Tabirca, along with Dr Laura Maye and Isabel Ronan, who accompanied and supported the students throughout the competition.
The success of Team Ireland reflects the strength of the training and preparation programme supporting students in informatics and computational thinking.
Participation in events such as EGOI highlights the importance of fostering talent in computer science and promoting greater inclusion in the field, providing students with the opportunity to engage with peers from across Europe at the highest level.
