Michael P. Mortell Scholarship in Applied Mathematics

UCC School of Mathematical Sciences (Joint Hons with Physics) student and Mitchelstown native Adam Luddy was recently awarded with The Michael P. Mortell Scholarship in Applied Mathematics 2022. Adam was presented the award by Emeritus Professor Michael Mortell.
The scholarship is awarded annually on the results of the Summer First University Examination to a student in Science or Arts studying Applied Mathematics. The value of the scholarship is €1,000 per year.
As an applied mathematician Michael Mortell is recognised for his research in the area of non-linear acoustics. In 1973, along with a colleague, he identified a functional equation later called The Standard Mapping which is of fundamental importance in understanding mathematical CHAOS. He was appointed President of UCC in 1989. His research activities continued during his time as Registrar and President. Following his presidency, he served as Personal Chair in Applied Mathematics from 1999 until his retirement in 2006.
Based at the School of Mathematical Sciences, Michael Mortell continues to participate in university life and contributes to research and publishing in applied mathematics. He is author and co-author of more than 50 research papers and two books on applied mathematics.
