UCC Physics Students Win 2nd Prize in Quantum Solutions for the Environment Challenge

Huge congratulations to student Bryan Chan, Anna Sheehan and Liam Waldron of University College Cork, for their project Quantum Perspectives on PFAS Pollution, which won 2nd prize at the Quantum Solutions for the Environment Challenge.
As a tribute to Bell, a Belfast-born physicist whose work fundamentally reshaped our understanding of quantum mechanics, this challenge aims to inspire the next generation of Irish scientists, engineers, and software developers to build on his legacy. Third-level students from any science, mathematics, engineering, or software course were invited to investigate how quantum principles can be applied to benefit the environment. From optimizing renewable energy systems to innovating sustainable materials and conservation solutions, students will explore how quantum science can address pressing environmental issues.

A total prize fund of €10,000 was distributed among the top teams, made possible by Equal1’s success in the Institute of Physics qBIG Prize last year. In addition to cash prizes, winners will receive mentorship from leaders in quantum and environmental science
