On Monday last, 13 March, the UCC STARS Awards took place in the Metropole Hotel, Cork.

The STARS Awards Ceremony is an annual event hosted by UCC Societies’ Executive to acknowledge the outstanding drive, commitment and work ethic of UCC students from all disciplines within UCC Societies. UCC is home to over 110 societies, from charitable societies, to linguistic societies, to everything imaginable between.

To mark Seachtain na Gaeilge (SnaG),we rebranded the Pharmacy Building with bilingual labelling. Throughout the week, numerous poster boards have been placed throughout the school to encourage staff and students to incorporate cúpla focail (a few words) into their daily conversations. Common Pharmacy terms and phrases have been translated.

We were delighted to welcome Irish Kidney Association representatives Sheena McDonagh and Pat O'Sullivan to the School of Pharmacy for World Kidney Day to talk with students about kidney disease and transplantation. 

On Saturday, the 11 February last, PharmSoc held the annual Pharmacy Ball in Cork’s Clayton Hotel, Silversprings. With over 300 individuals in attendance, the ballroom was alive with both students and staff of the School! The theme of this year’s ball was the 60’s, reflected in the ballroom being decorated with colourful balloon arches, Elvis cardboard cut outs and John Lennon sunglasses. The evening’s festivities began at 6 pm, with students mingling with their own cohort year groups and with students in other year groups within the pharmacy programme, followed by dinner at 7 pm. Afterwards, it was time for the highly anticipated annual Pharmacy Ball awards, hosted by PharmSoc chairperson Gráinne Barrett, vice-chairperson Emma Crowley, and first year coordinator/welfare officer Conor McCarthy. The first of the awards presented for the night was the School of Pharmacy’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) award which was awarded to Des Lee in third year. The rest of the awards followed with Professor Abina Crean notably winning faculty member of the year! The afters guests arrived at 9 pm at which point Cork band UV5 provided entertainment for the rest of the evening.

Students showed off their culinary skills on Pancake Tuesday 2023.

An interprofessional learning initiative between pharmacy, speech and language therapy and dietetics students, exploring the management of patients with various forms of swallowing difficulties, kicked off last week in the School of Pharmacy.  Students from all three disciplines learned from, with and about one another whilst working collaboratively within teams. Each team focussed on a specific patient case e.g., a patient who had Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia and the challenges of administering food, liquids and medicines to this patient in a safe and appropriate manner. Staff facilitated these discussions and students gained a comprehensive understanding of the unique but also common roles each healthcare professional has to offer towards the management of patients with swallowing difficulties. 

Thirty-five BPharm1 students receive UCC Entrance Scholarship Awards. 

The iEd Hub through the School of Pharmacy and Cork University Business School are delighted to announce the launch of a new 1-year postgraduate MSc programme in Industrial Pharmaceutical Sciences, Operations and Management. This unique multi-disciplinary programme covers the technical, quality, regulatory skills required to work in the (bio)pharma industry as well as the management, leadership and transversal skills required in the workplace. 

On 17th January 2023, the  All-island Vaccine Research and Training Alliance (AIVRT) held its inaugural meeting at University College Dublin (UCD). Among those in attendance were Dr Laura J Sahm, Dr Aoife Fleming, School of Pharmacy and Dr Anne Moore, School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology University College Cork.

AIVRT is a four-year alliance that brings together researchers from University College Cork, Queen's University Belfast, University College Dublin, and Trinity College Dublin to improve human health through vaccination. The organization aims to collaborate and share resources to advance vaccine research and training across Ireland.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the researchers to discuss their shared goal of improving human health through vaccination and to plan future collaborative projects. It's a great step forward to the future of better human health through vaccination on the island of Ireland.

The School of Pharmacy was delighted to host the ‘Pharmaceutical Quality and Regulatory Science Symposium’ in the Pharmacy Building, UCC on 7 December 2022. The theme of this year's meeting was ‘Addressing the quality and regulatory challenges of emerging drug products’.

Cell Explorers is a scientific outreach project involving lecturers and students from multiple third level institutions that aims to encourage and inspire primary school students to pursue their interests in the Life Sciences and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

UCC Futures – Future Medicines is developing next generation medicines and medical technologies for improved health outcomes & quality of life for those with chronic disease.

There are great opportunities to join our team at the School of Pharmacy, UCC where there are new academic jobs in Clinical Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Science. This new recruitment approach in UCC Futures is a unique opportunity to join our talented multi-disciplinary team of researchers, build collaborations with our clinical, healthcare and industry partners and advance the translation of next-generation medicine for chronic diseases. 

Jack Murray, a first-year student in the School of Pharmacy, has received the ‘Jane Grimson Medal’ at this year’s Irish Research Council (IRC) Research Awards for his STEM doctoral proposal.

This medal is awarded to the top-ranking researcher in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths from the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship funding call.

Jack is working under the supervision of Professor Brendan Griffin and Dr Patrick O'Dwyer.

UCC’s first year pharmacy students were delighted to each receive the 84^th edition of the British National Formulary (BNF), sponsored by Boots Ireland.  The BNF is one of the most extensively used books that students will depend upon throughout their pharmacy studies and post-graduation.  We sincerely thank Boots for their generosity with this worthy initiative.   

Antimicrobial Awareness Week takes place every year from 18 to 24 November. 

To mark the occasion, the School of Pharmacy, in conjunction with Pharmsoc, held an awareness morning at UCC’s Brookfield Health Sciences Complex.

On 16 November last, the annual Perrigo Scholarship awardees, in conjunction with Pharmsoc, were announced.

At the 2022 Pharma Industry Awards on 10 November held at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, the ArrayPatch - University College Cork won "Innovation of the Year". ArrayPatch is a microneedle project led by Dr Waleed Faisal and his team.

On Tuesday, 15^th November, we marked the beginning of a career-long journey between our First Year (BPharm1) students and the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), with a presentation and Q&A session. Dan Burns (Professional Standards Manager) and Pádraig Corbett (Professional Standards Officer) gave an engaging account of the role of the PSI, in the context of academic and professional development. 

Congratulations to fourth-year undergraduate student Sarah Barber on receiving the best poster prize at the Irish Pharmacy Haematology Oncology Society (IPHOS) 2022 annual education meeting held on 12 November 2022.

Sarah audited the testing of DPYD variant genes in UHW between June and September 2022. Testing for DPYD deficiency in patients starting fluoropyrimidine therapies was recommended by the EMA in April 2020, and is an essential medication safety step to prescribing these cytotoxic agents, used primarily to treat gastrointestinal and breast cancers. Sarah found excellent compliance with testing for genetic mutations of this gene, and that the incidence of DPYD genetic mutations in UHW was consistent with the reported rates of genetic variation in the literature. Sarah’s abstract was selected for an oral presentation at the Irish Pharmacy Haematology and Oncology Society (IPHOS) annual education meeting, where she won a prize for the best poster at the meeting, as voted for by the delegates.

For the second year in a row, young UCC researchers have received both prizes awarded at the annual meeting of the Irish Association of Pharmacologists held at Trinity College on November 11th.

UCC’s Pharmacy Society (PharmSoc) hosted their annual Career’s Talk on Wednesday evening, 2 November.  The event is a highlight in PharmSoc’s annual calendar and is organised for undergraduate students of the Pharmacy School to showcase the diversity and versatility of positions and career paths that a pharmacy qualification can provide.

The School of Pharmacy received their renewed Athena Swan Bronze award. This application was led by Dr Kevin Murphy, chair of the School of Pharmacy’s Athena SWAN team.  Other members of this team included Prof Abina Crean, Prof Brendan Griffin, Prof Stephen Byrne, Dr Waleed Faisal, Dr Rachel Moloney, Dr Sonja Vucen, Ms Aine Healy, Ms Noreen Moynihan, Ms Laura Gleeson (postgraduate representative) and Ms Maria Mulrooney (undergraduate representative). Prof Brendan Griffin stated that the award “will encourage us to seek further opportunities to achieve even more success and, in this sense, enable us to excel further as a place where staff and students can fulfill personal career goals.” Dr Murphy said that  “the success of the application is due to the staff and students of the School. Their daily embodiment of the Athena SWAN principles is what drives improvement and delivers impact. Seeing this, I am confident that the best days are ahead of us.”  Ms Noreen Moynihan attended the 2022 Athena Awards Ceremony on behalf of the School of Pharmacy at the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Castlebar on 8 November 2022.

Ms Barry represented the Irish Heart Foundation Heart Failure Support Group in Cork and spoke about her experience of being diagnosed with a heart condition and her ongoing care.  The session highlighted the importance of keeping the patient at the centre of healthcare decisions and the important role of the pharmacist in supporting people with chronic conditions, including heart failure.

School of Pharmacy led symposium aimed at ‘Addressing the quality and regulatory challenges of emerging drug products’ to take place on December 7^th 2022 at 14:00.

School of Pharmacy held its annual assembly on 5 October 2022.  This packed agenda included a presentation from Kate O’Flaherty BSc Pharm, Principal Officer at the Department of Health, Ireland in Population Health Screening in the Department of Health. 

The course is structured to provide specialist training to enable healthcare professionals, working in hospitals and primary care settings, extend their professional role within the evolving clinical healthcare system.

Ms Harrison delivered an insightful seminar on Leadership, Professionalism and the Future of Pharmacy Services.  The seminar stressed the importance of leadership in the pharmacy profession; described the many professional advances in recent years for pharmacists in Northern Ireland; and the importance to the health service of pharmacy workforce planning. Ms Harrison outlined the crucial role of the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer in supporting and empowering pharmacists while improving the quality and experience of care delivered across the health service.

The students enjoyed and learned so much from Orla. The session highlighted the importance of the pharmacist's role in diabetes, and patient representation and PPI in our pharmacy programme. Sincere thanks to Orla and Diabetes Ireland.

The session also included a practical training session on the use of blood glucometers for diabetes with Dr Devine and group work on the management of diabetes patient cases with Dr Fleming.

EU-funded research project led by UCC will use breakthrough RNA technology for patient friendly oral medicines

The first Annual Meeting of the InPharma EU network was held at the School of Pharmacy at UCC in Cork, Ireland between 20-24th June 2022. Approximately 70 participants attended this 5-day event, with a full-breakdown of the programme available here.

One particular highlight of the InPharma Annual Meeting 2022 was the Open Symposium, which had the theme of ‘Advancing an integrated, animal-free, end-to-end modelling approach to oral drug product development’. There was an exciting list of speakers at the event, including speakers from HPRA and Industry. The other days concentrated more specifically on topics in the InPharma Training network and were closed to InPharma members.

InPharma is a European Industrial Doctorate (EID) funded (€ 3.47 Million) from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions and is coordinated by Prof Brendan Griffin from the School of Pharmacy, UCC. The InPharma project is working towards making drug development more predictable and reducing animal testing in drug development by using a fully integrated, animal-free, end-to-end modelling approach to the formulation of drugs for oral administration.

The College of Medicine and Health Learning and Teaching Showcase 2022 was held in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on Friday 17th June. It was the first time the event had been held since 2019. Staff from the School of Pharmacy presented Learning and Teaching research at the event.

The colours reflect the School‘s ongoing commitment to welcoming and supporting diversity in our student body, staff, and partners. The unveiling of this feature during Pride month was attended by some of our professional pharmacy colleagues who support the delivery of our pharmacy programme.

Professor Delesha Carpenter, Eshelman School of Pharmacy, University of North Carolina delivered a guest seminar entitled "Preparing pharmacy staff to recognize and respond to individuals with suicide warning signs".

Aoife's research is a collaboration between the Pharmacy Department Cork University Hospital and the School of Pharmacy, UCC. She will investigate medication safety communication strategies, and the development of a quality improvement intervention in an Irish hospital setting.

SSPC Industry Impact of the Year has been awarded to a collaboration between Alkermes, Athlone, SSPC, the SFI Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals team at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork, and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) at the University of Limerick.

The School of Pharmacy is delighted to announce that its Athena SWAN Bronze Award has been renewed in the most recent application round. The Bronze Award is in recognition of its continued commitment to gender equality.

Maria's project, which examined patient knowledge of direct oral anticoagulant medications, was funded by the Health Research Board Summer Student Scholarship.

As the 2021/2022 academic year nears its end, PharmSoc (UCC’s Pharmacy Society) looks back at its events and successes.

We are delighted to announce that UCC is now back in the top 100 in Pharmacy & Pharmacology. A ranking of 66th in the world subject rankings is a major achievement and huge credit to all our incredible staff, students and graduates for excelling in research and teaching in Pharmacy and Pharmacology related disciplines.

In November 2020 the School of Pharmacy congratulated Professor Stephen Byrne who took up the role of Interim Registrar.  Once again the School of Pharmacy would like to congratulate him on his recent appointment as Registrar and Deputy President and wish him so much success in his role. 

BPharm4 student Kenneth Nwaezeigwe competed at the recent Irish Open National Powerlifting Championships (the Nationals, see www.irishpowerliftingfederation.com) on 12 – 13 March last and returned from Dublin as National Champion.

The Targeting Therapeutics for Brain Disorders Conference 2021 was hosted by Early Career Academics from the School of Pharmacy, UCC.

The School of Pharmacy, with the support of the HEA COMBINE grant and Practice Educator Co-ordinator Network (PECNET) ran a hugely successful Practice Education Conference, titled The Evolution of Practice Education: Sharing the Learning

The School of Pharmacy successfully ran its first mock Professional Registration Exam (PRE) in-house with the commitment and support of pharmacy colleagues from the community of practice, staff and the Post-graduate team. 

A Statutory Instrument has now been signed which allows for the administration of vaccinations by suitably trained pharmacy students. Working as a vaccinator is a unique experience for pharmacy students and this is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a national effort for population protection.

On Monday the 8th of February, UCC Pharmacy Society held the "Perrigo Scholarships Information Evening".  This evening was to promote and inform the BPharm students of UCC about this exciting, new opportunity organised by the society in collaboration with Perrigo Company Ltd and The School of Pharmacy. 

Dr Waleed Faisal and Prof Abina Crean filed for a joint patent for new microneedle technology, which has been published by the International Bureau of WIPO on 17 December 2020 under Publication No: WO 2020/250210.

The School of Pharmacy, OSCE course hosted by Prof Zubin Austin attended by 57 international and national delegates from across the health and social care sciences, supported by the HEA COMBINE grant.

Both wish to acknowledge the work of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) ​on this project.

The two-day MSc Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems workshop offered in a blended, hybrid format.

Michelle O'Driscoll, a first year PhD student in the Schools of Pharmacy and Chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Tim O'Sullivan, has been awarded the Jane Grimson Medal of Excellence for being the top ranked STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) applicant in the IRC GOIPG (Government of Ireland Postgraduate) scheme this year.

On Wednesday November 24^th 2021 UCC and Bruker jointly hosted a webinar on “Emerging NMR Solutions for the Pharmaceutical Industry".

UCC Pharmacy Society was awarded Best Departmental Society at the Board of Irish College Societies' (BICS) national awards virtual ceremony, which was held on 29 July 2020.

Dr Teresa Barbosa and Dr Suzanne McCarthy from the School of Pharmacy and Dr Aimee Stapleton from APC Microbiome Ireland were delighted to participate in the STE(A)M in Junior Cycle 2020 CPD Calendar programme by facilitating workshops for secondary school teachers, developed as part of the new STEAM curriculum Junior Cycle for Teachers.

The School of Pharmacy welcomed over twenty first year students to the MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems orientation session today.

To be eligible to apply for this award, a student must have received first class honours in their degree and both academic distinctions and the part played in the public life of the University are taken into consideration in choosing the winner. 

New molecules, developed by researchers in UCC, have been shown to dramatically improve the effectiveness of existing antibiotics against several strains of infectious diseases and will help address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.

The School of Pharmacy at UCC is currently running a Summer School in Advanced Pharmacy Topics for international students from Future University in Egypt (FUE).

Students of the MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems recently visited Regeneron Pharmaceuticals at Raheen in Limerick for an industrial site visit as part of their QP Masters Workshop. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals launched their Industrial Operations and Product Supply facility in Raheen in 2015 and it is now the largest-scale bulk biologics production facility in Ireland.

The School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with UCC Pharmacy Society, hosted an industry career information event organised by PIER in the Brookfield Health Science Complex on Thursday 14th November 2019.

The official graduation of the first graduates of the new BSc Pharmacy degree was held at FUE on 22^nd September 2019. Professor John O’Halloran, Deputy President and Registrar, was invited to speak at the graduation to mark significant contribution UCC have made to enhancing the quality of the new pharmacy degree at FUE.

APC Microbiome Ireland scientists based at University College Cork have shown for the first time that a high fat “western” diet reduces the efficiency of the immune system to fight infectious disease particularly in the gut, and to infection with the foodborne pathogen, listeria monocytogenes.

Wanted: Enthusiastic, creative, and driven Ph.D. candidates with a passion for interdisciplinary science and a desire to apply their unique talents to high-impact work aimed at improving human health, to a newly established laboratory at the School of Pharmacy at UCC.

BioMedica is a biennial congress hosted by The Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine and the Royal Dublin Society in the RDS, Dublin.  

For the past three months, I have had the good fortune of working on my final year research project in the UCC School of Pharmacy under the guidance of Dr. Christian Waeber. Congratulations to School of Pharmacy PhD Student, Kieran Walsh for winning best poster prize at the 4^th SPHeRE (Structured Population and Health Services Research Education) Network Annual Conference on Thursday 11^th January.

The School of Pharmacy, UCC and Future University in Egypt signed a co-operation agreement in 2014 which has led to the development of this Summer School.  The Summer School was attended by 26 undergraduate students from FUE who travelled to Cork to take part in the programme.  The students were accompanied by three staff members from FUE, Professor Nabila El Maraghy, Ms Dina Khaled Aboelfadl and Mr Mahmoud Fathy Ibrahim.

As part of our mission to enhance the international appeal of our degree programme, the School of Pharmacy collaborates with the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, East Tennessee State University.

The School of Pharmacy of the University College Cork and the PEARRL EU training network jointly organised the first Regulatory Science Symposium of this kind – a unique opportunity to discuss regulatory support of innovation in Europe`s pharmaceutical industry. 

The first Annual Meeting of the PEARRL EU network is being held at the School of Pharmacy at UCC in Cork, Ireland between 19-23 June 2017. 

Dr James Gallagher was recently conferred with his PhD degree for a thesis entitled "Economic Evaluations of Clinical Pharmacy Services in Ireland, 2007-2015".

Delighted to welcome the O’Duffy All Ireland Senior Camogie Trophy to the School of Pharmacy UCC today.

On Jan 6^th, the School of Pharmacy at UCC hosted its 8^th annual open day.  This is to give leaving cert students from around Ireland an opportunity to learn about the M.Pharm. qualification, the varied career possibilities as a Pharmacist and to experience lectures and labs in the key subject areas.

After graduating with a PhD from the Dept of Pharmacology, University College Dublin, Dr. Keely travelled to the University of California, San Diego, where he carried out his postdoctoral studies in the Dept. of Medicine.

The School of Pharmacy UCC invites applications from suitably qualified individuals with relevant experience who are interested in tutoring and/or lecturing on an hourly occasional part-time basis (i.e. not exceeding 6-8 hours per week) for the 2016-17 academic year. 

The NFQ level 9 Postgraduate Certificate in (Bio)Pharma Processing is an innovative programme offered to pharmacy, science and engineering graduates who wish to take up employment in the Irish (Bio)Pharma sector. The programme commencing in September 2016 will be taught over two semesters (September to December and January to April). The programme is part-time and will be taught via a combination of classroom and laboratory classes delivered Fridays (9.30am to 4.30pm) in the School of Pharmacy, UCC and the provision of course materials that students can study under their own schedule at home.

A preclinical study aimed at establishing the potential of fingolimod as an acute stroke therapeutic agent was recently funded by the Health Research Board.

UCC’s MSc in Clinical Pharmacy has won Postgraduate Course of the Year in the Health Sciences category at the gradireland Higher Education Awards. The win was announced at a gala lunch on Thursday, 24^th of November in the Crowne Plaza, Blanchardstown, Dublin. 

On the 10^th November the 6^th class pupils of Beaumont Girls National School visited the School of Pharmacy in UCC.

On Wed Oct 19^th the School of Pharmacy held a staff-student evening focusing on careers options for pharmacists.

Second year UCC Pharmacy student Brandon Malone is travelling to Boston this week to take part in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Science Competition. There will be over 260 teams from universities worldwide taking part in the competition this year. The iGEM Foundation is dedicated to education and competition, advancement of synthetic biology, and the development of open community and collaboration. Brandon was part of a team (also including UCC students Leanne O'Sullivan & Amy Keane - Biomedical Science, Donnchadh O'Sullivan & Aoife O'Brien-Horgan - Medicine & Shama Chilakwad - Biotechnology) working with Dr. Paul Young and Prof. Tommie McCarthy on a summer research project to develop novel tools for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections.

In December 2014 the Irish Minister for Health, with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), launched the new 5 year Master of Pharmacy Programme (MPharm) with the goal of helping future pharmacists better meet the changing needs of the healthcare system. The MPharm, provided by each of the three Schools of Pharmacy in Ireland, will achieve this outcome in part by integrating experiential learning into all five years of their programmes, permitting a greater level of contextualisation of knowledge over the current model of education and training.

The ever-increasing complexity of health care products requires a data driven, evidence based approach to their regulation. Regulatory Science Ireland (RSI) is a national response to these developments, and held a seminar on Tuesday September 8th in Cork to strengthen links with the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device industry.

A dynamic group of interdisciplinary experts from the School of Pharmacy were awarded first prize in the poster presentation at The European Conference on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning that took place at UCC in June 2105.

Second year student, Donagh O’ Shea was successful in obtaining a HRB Summer Studentship – his project is entitled “Expanding the clinical application of electroporation in combination with 3D printed scaffolds for the treatment of bone cancer”. 

Second year student, Stephen McInerney was successful in obtaining a HRB Summer Studentship – his project is entitled “Examining vaccine delivery with microneedle patches to human skin”. Stephen will undertake this project with Dr. Anne Moore’s group at the School of Pharmacy, UCC. Stephen will investigate how much vaccine is delivered into human skin using a novel vaccine delivery technology called ImmuPatch.

An interdisciplinary research team based at University College Cork conducted an Irish Department of Health commissioned project entitled “A systematic literature review to support a framework for the development of standards for clinical practice guidance”.

This is a two year distance learning Masters run by the School of Pharmacy in UCC. The Pharmacy Society will host a postgraduate information evening on Tuesday 24th Feb at 5.15pm in LG52 entitled “PhD: Life after Pharmacy”. This event is aimed at all Pharmacy students who are contemplating undertaking a PhD in the future.

Congratulations to UCC BPharm 2015 graduate  Patrick O’Dwyer, who was awarded the Dr. H.H. Stewart Medical Scholarship and Prize in Pharmacy at the annual NUI Awards Ceremony held in the Great Hall at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham on 10 November 2015. 

Elaine Enright, a 2014 graduate of the School of Pharmacy, was recently awarded a prestigious Irish Research Council (IRC) Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship to complete a PhD in the School of Pharmacy and APC Microbiome Institute in UCC. 

The ninth Annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the 2015 graduating class took place in the School of Pharmacy, this morning 30 October 2015, just prior to student graduation.    

This award was founded by the Novartis Educational Bursary with the purpose of recognising the academic excellence of young scientists working in basic or clinical research in a haematology related field in Ireland. 

7 students from UCC brought home a gold medal this year in a prestigious synthetic biology competition held in Boston, USA from Sept 24th – 28th. 

The official ceremony for the signing of a Cooperation Agreement between University College Cork and Future University in Egypt (FUE) was at UCC on 18th September 2014. Professor Ebada Sarhan, President of FUE and Professor Michael Murphy, UCC, signed an agreement whereby the School of Pharmacy, UCC will support the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Industries, FUE in the delivery of an enhanced Pharmacy degree programme by FUE in Cairo. 

A new patch has been developed by scientists at University College Cork which could improve the effectiveness of a vaccine against malaria.

Pearl Prendergast was successful in obtaining a HRB Summer Studentship – her project is entitled “Health Literacy and Medication Adherence Among Older Community Dwelling Adults”.

Dr. Cormac Gahan, senior lecturer in Microbiology within the School of Pharmacy is to present his work on ‘BioMedical Applications in Synthetic Microbiology’ at an international conference on ‘The Synthetic Biology Future’ to be held in Cork on Thursday 13^th March 2014. The conference will feature some of the world’s leading scientists and entrepreneurs in the field of Synthetic Biology to discuss the opportunities and challenges that exist within this exciting new field.

On Friday 28 Feb 2014, the graduation ceremony took place of the MSc in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems at the School of Pharmacy UCC. This year, eight people graduated from the programme. Six students, Jurgen Mifsud, Claire O’Sullivan, Marie McDonnell, Aisling Gilligan, Stephan Henken and Stephen Keane were conferred with a Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems. Two students were awarded Postgraduate Diplomas. All graduates are in full time employment within the Pharmaceutical Industry. 

Dr. Cormac Gahan of the School of Pharmacy and the School of Microbiology in UCC is a partner in a successful EU Horizon 2020 award to establish an Initial Training Network in the area of Listeria monocytogenes biology. 

The School of Pharmacy hosted a PIER (Pharmacists in Industry, Education & Regulatory) Careers evening for the Pharmacy student at UCC on 5th November 2014. 

The annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the 2014 graduating class took place in the School of Pharmacy 31st October 2014 before the University conferrings.  Professor Stephen Byrne, Head of School welcomed, parents, graduates, staff and the sponsors of these annual prizes.  The representatives of organisations who had donated prizes were thanked for their their continuing generosity which is very much appreciated by the School

Dr Eileen O’Leary, School of Pharmacy & Dept of Chemistry University College Cork has been recognised as a Teaching Hero by her students in the inaugural National Teaching Hero Awards.

The School hosted a Scientific Conference on Friday 27 September 2013.  The Conference was opened by Professor John Higgins, Head of the College of Medicine & Health who congratulated all the team for their successes, not only in teaching, but also their contributions to research over the last ten years.  He also commented on the central role that pharmacy plays in patient welfare and health related research.   Professor Anita Maguire, VP for Research & Innovation, addressed the audience on how industry and academia can innovate together to benefit research and the economy generally. Two keynote speakers also addressed the audience.

The School of Pharmacy is ten years old this year.  To mark this occasion, the School is hosting a Scientific conference on Friday 27 September 2013.  The theme of the Conference is “Driving the Pharmacy Research Agenda – connecting the laboratory to the bedside”

Guest speakers include:

Professor Sandy Florence Professor Emeritus with The School of Pharmacy, University of London and was previously Dean of the School in London.

Professor Carmel Hughes Professor in Primary Care Pharmacy at the School of Pharmacy, Queens University Belfast.  In addition School of Pharmacy research staff will give flash presentations to highlight the extent and nature of research ongoing.  Postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers will take part in a poster session.

All are welcome to attend to help us celebrate this event.

Over forty pharmaceutical manufacturing personnel converged on Friday 31st January to attend an ‘Enabling Continuous Processing Knowledge Day’ organised on the behalf of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC), an Enterprise Ireland/IDA funded research group. The event which took place in the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) was hosted by the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork in conjunction with the Department of Process Energy and Transport Engineering and Centre for Advanced Photonics and Advanced Analysis (CAPPA), CIT.

Professor Caitriona O’Driscoll and Dr Anne Moore recently took part in a Get Started Venture Technology programme which is an entrepreneurial skills programme for University Researchers designed to equip participants with relevant knowledge and skills to  assist them to commercialise their research, product or service.

A big congratulations to Dr JJ Keating, Dr Eileen O'Leary and Dr Tim O'Sullivan (School of Pharmacy and Department of Chemistry) who received an award for their Research into Innovative Forms of Teaching under the Teaching and Learning Awards category.

The National University of Ireland held their annual awards ceremony on Tuesday 12 November to celebrate academic excellence among students and graduates of NUI institutions. Ms Marie O’Halloran a graduate of the School in Summer 2013 came second in the Dr HH Stewart Scholarship for Pharmacy in 2013.  Marie is pictured here with the Chancellor of the NUI, Dr Maurice Manning at the NUI awards ceremony.
