The School of Pharmacy congratulates Rehab Elhiny, who has successfully defended her PhD thesis titled Patient factors affecting prescribing and outcomes in cardiovascular disease.

Supervised by Dr Margaret Bermingham, Dr Linda O’Keeffe, Dr Maria Donovan, and Prof Stephen Byrne, Dr Elhiny’s research demonstrated that a substantial number of individuals at risk of cardiovascular disease fail to meet their cholesterol and blood pressure targets, that many eligible patients are not prescribed lipid-lowering or antihypertensive treatments according to guidelines, and when prescribed, these therapies are frequently not intensive enough to achieve recommended goals. Patient factors including age, sex, and polypharmacy were identified as influencing the likelihood of reaching these targets.

Dr Elhiny is a graduate of Minia University in Egypt and is a recipient of a national scholarship from the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

The School extends its thanks to Professor Simon White, Keele University and Dr Suzanne McCarthy, UCC for serving as examiners, and warmly congratulates Dr Elhiny on this significant achievement.
