The School of Pharmacy congratulates Michael Neary, who has successfully defended his PhD thesis titled “Processing, formulation and delivery strategies to ensure stable and efficacious siRNA medicines”.

Supervised by Dr Katie Ryan, Professor Abina Crean and Dr Piotr Kowalski, Michael’s research demonstrated the importance of nanocarrier formulation selection in ensuring the stability and gene-silencing efficacy of nebulised siRNA for pulmonary delivery. In addition, it established a novel jet freeze-drying process capable of preserving siRNA encapsulation efficiency, structural integrity, and biological activity.

Michael is a graduate from the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork. The research was supported by SSPC, the Research Ireland Centre for Pharmaceuticals.

The school extends its thanks to Prof. Yvonne Perrie, University of Strathclyde and Prof. Brendan Griffin, UCC for serving as examiners and Dr Dervla O’Malley who acted as independent chair for the examination.
