Access UCC Easter School Participants Gain Healthcare Insights at School of Pharmacy

20 Apr 2026

As part of Access UCC‘s Easter School, the School of Pharmacy was thrilled to host 44 Transition Year and 5th Year students from its partner schools over 2 days.

Students participated in workshops coordinated by the College of Medicine and Health Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group and locally by Dr Teresa Barbosa.

Students attended an interactive workshop, where they learned about different healthcare careers and programmes through interactive exercises. The workshop was delivered by staff from the School of Pharmacy together with colleagues from dental nursing, physiotherapy, nursing and midwifery, and speech and language therapy, giving the students insights into potential future careers in healthcare.

On Wednesday, 1 April, students participated in a workshop in the Pharmacy Building. This session included a series of practical activities, from role-playing a patient-pharmacist scenario, learning the importance of aseptic processing, preparing blister packs/pill boxes, and exploring pharmaceutical tablet production and composition. On Friday students learned about proper use of inhalers. These sessions were delivered by Dr Teresa Barbosa, Dr Maria Donovan, Dr Suzanne McCarthy, Dr Mary O’Connell Motherway, Dr Kevin Murphy, Dr Katie Ryan, and the PhD students Nancy Moore and Ellen Melia.

Feedback from students was excellent, and the School of Pharmacy staff were delighted to contribute to the annual Access UCC Easter School, which allows young people to experience both life and facilities at UCC.
