Men’s Health Symposium

Virtual reality gaming promotes men’s health.
The Men’s Health Symposium which will take place at University College Cork on Friday, November 24th aims to encourage men to look after their health and in particular help raise awareness and promote testicular self-examination and early help-seeking for symptoms of testicular disease.
Dr. Mohamad Saab, Senior Lecturer and Director of Graduate Studies at School of Nursing & Midwifery UCC conducted two studies having developed and launched the E-MAT virtual reality (VR) game and the ‘On The Ball’ campaign in collaboration with a number of national and international researchers.
Dr. Saab developed E-MAT, a 3-level educational game delivered using a VR headset with voiceover and two controllers. E-MAT stands for Enhancing Men’s Awareness of Testicular Diseases and the game takes place in a virtual apartment. In the past, Dr. Saab tested this game with university students and staff on two occasions who described E-MAT as “user friendly, engaging and suitable for men from various socioeconomic and educational backgrounds”.
Dr. Saab said: “This is the first time VR gaming is being used to promote men’s health, hence the importance of the E-MAT study, particularly among athletes engaged in field games such as hurling who are at an increased risk of testicular injury and diseases”.
Dr. Saab also launched the “On The Ball” campaign as an inclusive community‐based campaign to raise awareness of testicular diseases, that is “to promote men’s awareness of the normal look and feel of their testicles, the most common testicular symptoms and the importance of testicular self-exams and of seeking medical help for symptoms of concern”.
