Distinguished Recognition for UCC-Affiliated Dermatology at the Royal Society of Medicine

13 Nov 2025

Dr Brian Nolan, Dermatology Registrar, has been awarded Best Clinical Case at the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Dermatology Clinical Cases Meeting in October.

The dermatology teams at Cork University Hospital (CUH) and South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH) are pleased to note the achievement of Dr Brian Nolan.

Dr Nolan, a UCC graduate, is an adjunct clinical lecturer with the Dermatology Department. Dr Nolan presented “Rapid clearance of recalcitrant cutaneous lupus erythematosus with anifrolumab,” a case prepared in collaboration with Dr Cathal O’Connor, Consultant Dermatologist at SIVUH and CUH, Professor Gráinne Murphy, Consultant Rheumatologist at CUH, and Professor Michelle Murphy, Consultant Dermatologist at SIVUH and CUH, lead author and senior clinical lecturer at UCC. The award was conferred on 16 October in London by the President of the RSM Dermatology Section and the Dean of Education at the Royal Society of Medicine.

The winning case examined the evolving role of anifrolumab in the management of recalcitrant cutaneous lupus, illustrating how advances in the understanding of interferon-mediated disease pathways are shaping new therapeutic possibilities in autoimmune dermatology. It emphasised the challenges faced when conventional systemic agents prove inadequate and the potential value of targeted biologic therapies in such settings.

The work also highlighted the increasingly integrated approach between dermatology and rheumatology in Cork University Hospital, reflecting the multidisciplinary care now central to the management of patients with complex multisystem autoimmune disease. This collaborative model supports more comprehensive clinical assessment and more refined therapeutic decision-making.

This recognition underscores the established academic strength and clinical innovation from Cork’s dermatology department and affirms their commitment to advancing specialist care, academic practice, and cross-disciplinary collaboration for patients with complex skin disorders.
