Announcing the 7th Interdisciplinary Cork Pain Symposium

8 Mar 2023
Looking forward to welcoming our keynote speaker Professor Morten Hoegh to Cork.

Nano Nagle Place, Saturday, 25th March 2023 8:30 - 14:00

Musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of disability worldwide, approximately 75 million people in Europe are affected by chronic pain; in Ireland alone an estimated 1.65 million people report chronic pain.

Despite the widespread prevalence of musculoskeletal pain conditions, management is often suboptimal with outcomes of treatment poor.

The 7th Interdisciplinary Cork Pain Symposium brings together international and local expertise in the field of pain science and management. The symposium aims to highlight current issues in pain management and present some of the current developments in musculoskeletal pain, its assessment and treatment.

We are delighted to welcome our keynote speaker Professor Morten Hoegh to Cork.

General Registration is €50, free registration for verified Students. This event is granted 4 CPD training points.

The Symposium Speakers and Faculty

• Prof. Morten Hoegh, from Aalborg University, Denmark and Chair of the European Pain Federation’s (EFIC) Academy will deliver a Master Class on Musculoskeletal Pain which will introduce participants to a critical and clinical perspective on the three mechanistic descriptors for pain science: Nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain and nociplastic pain. He will give a brief introduction to the nociceptive system and related terminology as well as to each of the three descriptors. Then, using clinical examples, he will discuss how the mechanism-based approach can support recommended therapies and where the descriptors may be insufficient to give solid clinical guidance.

• Dr Joseph McVeigh, Senior Lecturer and Head of Discipline of Physiotherapy, will share some his research and insights into the management of fibromyalgia syndrome.

Professor Dominic A. Hegarty, Consultant in Pain Management & Neuromodulation and President elect of the World Institute of Pain will speak on what the future of best practise care for musculoskeletal pain and what it will look like beyond 2023.

• Top 5 in 5: key update for research ongoing in the department of physiotherapy and Department of pain Medicine.

• Interactive Workshops will give participants the opportunity to explore Quantitative Sensory Testing and pain assessment, and the use of ultrasound scanning as an adjunct to knee assessment and to the newest non-invasive treatment available.
